GREEN PONDS SCHOOL ROOM.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE MERCURY.

Sir,-With some surprise I read in yesterday's Mercury that in a letter to the Central Board, Rev. Mr. Shipphird stated " that the Green Point Local School Board had refused him the use of the school- room for Divine Worship on Sunday evenings."Now, as a member of that Board, I beg to state that no meeting was called, nor was-the matter referred to us at all, and the first time I became aware that Rev. Mr. Shipphird had made any such application was on Sunday evening last.

I am, Sir, yours obediently,

THOMAS LUDBEY.

THOMAS LUDBEY

Contributed by Barry J. Betts

Thomas Ludbey was a free settler, born 22 Jan 1809 Horseheath , England ; 1st marriage to Charlotte McCormack (nee Nichols) 29 Oct 1833, Hobart ;

2nd marriage to Susan Pearsall 25 Nov 1843, Hobart; raised 15 children; died Bridgewater 16 Feb 1900 & is bur in St Mary's Church cemetery, Bridgewater .

He joined the army in England & was an Ensign in the 3rd (or East Kent ) Regiment of Foot (the Buffs)

After emigrating to Tasmania , he was given land grants in the Clarence area.  Part of his grant was right in Bellerive.  The Bellerive Cricket/Football oval is on part of his grant. I have a copy of the Lands Dept map showing Thomas' Bellerive acreage.

His professions were:  Farmer (with the help of convict labour), Innkeeper, School Teacher. I also found a reference to him being at one time one of two auditors of the local council.

His father (Thomas Ludbey, M.A.) was rector of All Saints Church, Cranham, Essex where he died (aged 74) in 1859 after serving in that position for 41 years.

He was buried outside the Chancel window on the east side of the church where he had served so faithfully for all those years.

He sired five children: Thomas (chrs by his father), who came to Tasmania , and four daughters.  One dau married the President of St Johns College, Oxford .  Another daughter'sdaughter became a well-known French novelist.
