Went to New Zealand with his Family in 1847 as part of the 4th detachment of royal New Zealand fencibles

serving in Howick on Board the '' Sir George Seymour ''.

They left Gravesend, Ireland on the 12th of Aug 1847 at mid day, arriving in Aucland on the 26th of Nov 1847.

James served in the British Army serving anywhere between 10 to 20 years before retirering.

He would have been around 30 to 40 years old at this point, definately under 48. Desperately wanting to leave

Ireland because of the hardships of the time, he joined up to be part of the royal New Zealand fencibles, on

the promise of after serving 7 years in the new country he would own a house and land package.
