Biography

Notes for HOPETOUN (HOPTON) URQUHART:

Hopton's name is shown on his baptism certificate as "Hopetoun". This seems to be the only record

of that spelling. On all other certificates i.e death certificates including those of his children the

"Hopton" spelling is used. His headstone also has the "Hopton" spelling. We will perhaps never

know where the name "Hopetoun" came from , but there is a town near Esperance in Western

Australia with that name as well as one in western Victoria.
