" the death is Announced of a very old Creswick identity, in the pers on of Mr Thomas Sleep, of the Hard Hills near the Railway station, who died at the hospital on Tuesday of old age. Deceased, who was in his 80th year, had for a long time been in a weak state, and recently was remov ed to the hospital for treatment. A few years ago, with Mr. Wm. Keen (since deceased) he carried on the business of Keen and Sleeps weigh bridge. Deceased was generally respected as an upright and honorable man. The funeral will take place at 3 p.m. today.

The baptism of Thomas Sleep is found in the Register Book of Births, Bapt isms & Burials of the Wesleyan Chapel in the Tavistock Circuit situa te in the Counties of Devonshire & Cornwall (founded about the year 1809 ). Entry #230 in the record of baptisms reads:

 

Thomas son of George and Mary Ann Saunders of the Parish of Landulph, Cor nwall was born Nov 9th and baptized Dec 8th at Calstock, Devon by me Richa rd Shepherd minister.

 

At the time of the 1851 British Census, Thomas was residing on Fore Street in Bere Alston, Devonshire. Also included in the household at the ti me were his wife Mary and their five children - Mary Eliza, 8; Thomas Davi d, 6; Jane Ann, 2, and John Henry, 5 months. Both Thomas and his wife we re listed as being employed as a "mine labourer," while eldest daughter Mary Eliza brought in additional income as a "mine girl."

 

Thomas Sleep, miner of Gunnislake, and Mary Morgan, spinster of Gunnislak e, were married at the Parish Church, Calstock, Cornwall, England on Satur day, 16 February 1839. The service, performed by the Rev. John H. Cartwrig ht according to the rites and ceremonies of the Church of England (after B Anns), was witnessed by Wm. Hawking and Mary Williams. The marriage certif icate records that Thomas was the son of George Sleep, shoemaker, while Ma ry was the daughter of David Morgan, labourer.
