The marriage ceremony was performed according to the Rites & Ceremoni es of the church of England by the Rev. F. Shelley. At the time of the wed ding Abraham was employed as a miner and residing in Beeralstone, while h is bride, a servant was living in Birch.[SLEEP (melanie).FTW]

Abraham Sleep, the son of George and Mary Ann (S kelton) Sleep, was born in Calstock, Cornwall, England on Sunday, 6 March 1825. He was the 7 th child to be born to th e couple, the family at the time of his birth al ready consi sting of three sisters and three brothers.

The baptism of Abraham Sleep is found in the Regi ster Book of B irths, Baptisms & Buriels of the Wesleyan Cha pel in the Travistock Circu it situate in the Counties of De vonshire & Cornwall (founded about the ye ar 1809). Entry # 533 in the record of baptisms reads:

"Abraham son of George Sleep Sanders of Calstoc k, Shoemak er , and Mary Ann, his wife was born 6 March, an d baptized 20 March 18 25 by me Oliver Henwood."

Abraham grew up in the parish of Calstock, where ove r the next f ew years, four more brothers and sisters woul d be added to his family. I ncluded were sisters Belinda an d Dinah and two brothers , William and Sam ual, all born bet ween 1826 and 1833.

By 1841 the Sleep family had moved across the rive r to the villa ge of Bere Alston in the Devonshire parish o f Bere Ferrers, and it was the re that Abraham met Susannea Ja go, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Jag o. The couple wer e married on Friday, 15 August 1845 in St. Andrew's Par is h Church in Bere Ferrers by the Rev. F. Shelley.

Susannea, who was already expecting a child, gave bir th to a daugh ter, Ann, on 16 November 1845. Ann would be t he first of twelve childr en born to Abraham and Susannea i n Bere Alston between 1845 and 1867. T he other five boys a nd six girls would include Henry (1848), Amelia (1850 ), Fan ny (1852), Selina (1854), Samual (1856), James (1858), Will iam (18 60), Lucy (1863), Theophilus (1864), FAnny Selina (1 866) and Emma (1867).

Silv er, and lead mines in particular, had been wo rked in the parish of Bere F errers from time immemorial an d were already in full production in the re ign of Edward I . Two of the main workings in the 1840's were the Sou th Ho oe Mine and the South Tamar Consols. It is probable tha t Abrah am Sleep worked in one of these two mines.

If he had been an employee of the South Tamar Conso l, Abraham Sl eep may have experienced a close call in 1856 , when a terrible disaster s truck the mine. At 8pm on Augu st 31st, the mine was flooded by the Riv er Tamar bursting i nto it. Since it was Sunday, however, the miners we re no t at work, although if it had been a week day, many would h ave be en killed. The mine was never re--opened.

Abraham Sleep died in Bere Alston on Monday, 4 Jun e 1877 at the a ge of 52 years from "morbus cerdis" and exha ustion. He was buried on Fri day, June 8, probably in the c hurchyard of Holy Trinity Church at Bere Al ston. No headst one, however, presently exists to mark his grave.
