Biography

Judge John Tyson Smith, Sr. was born near Anniston, Alabama and at the age of 9, was brought to Upshur County about 15 miles east of Gilmer. He first married Elladora Keasler and had Volney and Willie. Elladora, Volney and Willie all died by June 1876. In 1883, he married a widow, Mrs. Robert Marion Keasler, nee` Nancy Melvina Skaggs. John served the City of Longview as City Tax Assessor and Justice of the Peace before serving as Judge from 1888 through 1898 and again in 1901
