Biography

wed 26 April, 1838
Comments:
June Craft wed Israel  A neighbour told me this story which she had heard from her parents: My great-great-grandmother Elizabeth died in 1886 in her 76th year. Her son John was a coffin-maker and supplied the usual wooden coffin and placed it, as the custom was, on sawbucks in the sitting room of the old Long family farm house (which was still standing when I was a teen-ager until about 1946). Because sometimes corpses revived, the custom was for the old folks to sit up all night after a death in case there was breathing heard. The farmhouse was built on a geological fault and there was a slight earthquake during the night which caused the sawbucks to fall, upset the coffin and great-great grandmother's corpse sat bolt upright. The neighbours ran out of the house, screaming that it was the end of the world!

June Craft wed Israel  I believe that Elizabeth (Doub) Long 1809-1886 may have cared for her brother Daniel's son Irvin Doub from the age of one, until his father was remarried in 1866 to Teresa Craft, about nine years after his first wife, Elizabeth (Petree) Doub, died in 1857. There must have been a double family tragedy because Rev.Daniel (1814-1874) and Elizabeth (Petree) Doub's toddler daughter Susan Doub (1855-1857) died near or at the same time as her mother, leaving the one-year old Irvin (1856-1932) and two older brothers, Jacob Doub (1850-1891) and John William Doub (1848-1928) motherless. Elizabeth (Doub) Long was Daniel's older sister and had a large family of daughters and lived nearby and the Long family Bible lists Irvin, while none of the other nephews were so listed. This was not unusual because Teresa (Craft) Doub (1830-1890) had a four-year old son Boyd Doub (1869-1932) and also cared for her infant nephew Charlie Craft after her sister-in-law died shortly after childbirth. I do not know whether Daniel's children by his first marriage returned to Teresa''s household, because Rev. Daniel Doub died only 8 years after his second marriage, leaving her with a five-year old son and a toddler nephew.

Teresa (Craft) Doub's brother Junius Craft was a Civil War Confederate veteran who had been shot in the leg at Fredericksburg and he remarried, but his motherless son Charlie grew up in his aunt Teresa's household. Dates are very relevant when piecing together family histories.
