Biography

Date of death and names and dates of birth of several children from Pilgrim Edward Doty and Faith Clark tree on Ancestry.com by Richard Hunsaker

Helen Doughty's husband's first name is alternately listed as GRANVILLE and as GEORGE.

The census does not make this any easier. He is George C. in 1850, GRANVILLE in 1870 and G.C. in every other year.

However the list of children remains the same:
SAMUEL R., b. 1847 or 1848
NASH OGDEN or Ogden Nash. b. 8/31/1851
ALEX B. 1855
GEORGE B 1859
Timothy R b 1862
Davey b 1864
Clifford b. 1869

Whether he is shown as George or as Granville, his middle initial is always C for Clifford.

My grandmother, Velma Folsom Gerald (b. to Samuel R and Leila Holmes in 1890) said in her handwritten notes that her grandfather was Granville. Velma also had a brother and a first cousin named Granville Clifford Gerald. Based on these facts, plus another family's tree which shows a GLANVILLE born to Dr. Samuel Gerald and Elizabeth Norman in 1818 (the right year and the right parents), I am inclined to accept that my great great grandfather was GRANVILLE C. Gerald, and that this is the correct name of Helen Doughty's husband.  There are some other records from other trees which say that there was an Olanville Gerald born in 1818.  I suspect this was a poor transcription of old handwriting, but have the name on this chart.  There were twins in the Gerald family in the next generation, but we have no records that there were twins born in 1818.

Granville Clifford Gerald born in 1818 had TWO grandsons named Granville Clifford Gerald: one born to his eldest son Samuel Robert Gerald in 1879, and one born to his 3d son Nash Ogden Gerald in 1888.
