Biography

One side of the tombstone monument  at Forest Lawn Cemetary  reads;

Willie Rumrill,  son of Henry And Melissa Rumrill

died  March 6, 1857 Aged 7 months

and below this

"Charlie"
Charles Henry
Eldest son of Henry and Melissa Rumrill

Charlie's dates cannot be read on the weathered stone.   Family notes indicate he was born in 1855.  His date of death is uncertain.

photograph is from the family album of his sister Annette Runrill, and is labeled Charlie.

"Charlie" is noted to have been the eldest son of Henry and Melissa Rumrill. On the same side of the Rumrill monument, but inscribed above Charlie's engraving is that of his brother Willie. We know from cemetery records that Charlie died in 1859 and that Willie died in 1857. This raises the possibility that Charlie outlived his younger brother by two years, but we do not have the date of birth of either of Henry and Melissa's sons whose names are inscribed on this side of the monument. The inscription says that Willie was 7 months old when he died on March 6, 1857.
The part of Charlie's inscription giving any dates has been worn away. Cemetery records say that he was buried in 1859. If he was the eldest son of Henry and Melissa, he must have been born before Willie, whose age at death suggests that he was born in 1856. Melissa writes in 1855 that Charlie "squeaks whenever he sees a stranger", supporting the idea that Charlie was an infant in 1855.

It is likely that Charlie did live at least two years. Sympathy letters to Henry when Melissa died refer to "Charlie's guileless shouts". This does not sound like a description of a child under a year old.

This photo, from his older sister Annette's album, is labeled Charlie, but is undated.

Annette, who married James Robertson Bowie, named her first child Charles Rumrill Bowie.
