John Twaddle/Tweeddale was born in 1848 in Dalziel Parish, Lanarkshire, he is on the 1851 Scotland Census,taken 30th March,with his parents John 24, occupation Coal Miner, Mother Ann Cullen 22 and sister Jean 1, John is aged 3. He also appears on the 1861 Scotland Census 7th April as a stepson of James Preece of 188 Milton Street, Dalziel,Lanarkshire on this census his sister Jean is referred to as Jane Twaddle and he has ayounger brother William Twaddle aged 9 as well as half sisters Ann.E.Pruce 3 and Harriet Pruce aged 3 months. John married Married Margaret Tomkinson 1852-1892 in Dalziel on the 22nd December 1871 and he is on the 1881 England Census living at 25 Alliance St, Stockton on Tees, his occupation is Ironworker he is aged 32, Margaret and he have 3 children John 8, Maria Elizabeth3 and Jane1. Later that year John and all of his family migrated to Australia they arrived at Cooktown,Northern Queensland on the 19th of November 1881 on the ship Chyebassa. I don't know how long they stayed in Cooktown but my great-grandmother Margaret McKay nee Twaddle was born in Helidon, southern Queensland in 1888. By 1892, John is living in Maryborough, Queensland working as a Ironworker, where sadly both his wife Margaret and infant son die, John appears to have taken his own life on the 19th on December 1892 leaving behind 7 children, John 20, Maria Elizabeth 15, Jane 12, Thomas 11, Mary Jane7, Annie 5 and my greatgrandmother Margaret aged 4. John and Margaret were both members of the Non-Conformist, Wesleyan Methodist Church. Both he and Margaret are buried in the Maryborough Cemetery.
