Moved to Carroll Co.Iowa at age of 3 (1879), then in 1881 moved to Lake Co. SD. later moved to Salem with Louisa and purchased a home after retiring from farming.


"The winter of 1880-81 was one of the most severe winters in Dakota history. Railroad traffic to Salem (& other points in the territory was tied up by snow. Then in March, damaging floods ripped through river towns destroying bridges, RR tracks, cities & towns." (Reported in Salem Special nov 12, 1998, as the "Register" of March 1881 had to resort to printing on cloth, as the shipment of paper had not arrived from St. paul)
