Samuel Sleep, son of George & Mary Ann (Skelton) Sleep

Samuel Sleep, miner, was living in St. Giles in the Fields, Bere Alston, Devonshire, England at the time of the 1851 British Census. Record with him were his wife Grace, age 22, and their one-week-old son, William.
At the time of the 1900 Federal Census (2 June 1900), Samuel Sleep and his wife Grace were residing in the Village of Laurium, Calumet Township, Precinct No. 2. Also residing in the household at the time were son-in-law William Cudlip, daughter Amelia Cudlip and grandson William G. Cudlip. Both Samuel and William were listed as working as copper miners. Samuel, the census noted, had immigrated to the U.S. in 1852. It is of interest to note that Grace stated that she was the mother of "12" children, only "5" of whom were living at the time.
Samuel Sleep died of pneumonia on Friday, April 20, 1906 at Laurium, Houghton County, Michigan at the age of 73 years 2 months and 22 days. His death certificate listed his occupation as "miner."

Samuel's obituary, as found in The Sunday Mining Gazette of Houghton, Michigan (Sunday, April 22, 1906, Page 6) reported:

OLD PIONEER DIES. Samuel Sleep, Sr. Died After Long Residence in the County. After a residence in the copper country over forty-five years, Samuel Sleep Sr. passed away yesterday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Cudlip, of 36 Willow Avenue. He had been ailing for some time past, so that his death was not entirely unexpected.
The decedent was seventy-three years of age and was born in Cornwall, Eng. He came to the copper country when there was little more than a few shacks to be seen here. Most of this time he resided near Houghton, but for the past ten years has made his home in Calumet. He is survived by five children, they being Mrs. Cudlip, Mrs. William Tredea, of Boston location; Samuel Sleep, Jr., of Calumet; George Sleep, of Hancock; and William, who lives in the west. The funeral will take place Monday with services at the Laurium M.E. church, Rev. W.E. Marvin officiating and with interment at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton.

The Copper County Evening News (Saturday, April 21, 1908, Page 8) further noted"

Samuel Sleep Sr. Samuel Sleep, Sr., aged seventy-three years, died this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Cudlip of Willow Ave. Mr. Sleep was born in Cornwall, England, and had lived in this country for forty-five years, ten of which were spent in Calumet. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William Cudlip and Mrs. William Tredea of Calumet; and three sons, Samuel of Laurium, George of Hancock, and William located in the west. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon from the Laurium M.E. Church, Reverend W. E. Marvin officiating with interment at Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton.

His headstone in Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton reads:

The family lot (Lot 3, Block 47, Section 5) is very large and surrounded by curbing. At the center of the burial plot is a large granite monument with the name "SLEEP" on it. Samuel Sleep is buried in the right-hand corner as one faces the center monument. To his immediate left is his wife Grace and then Grace's mother, Jane Doubt (died March 3, 1881 at the age of 81 years). Further to the left is Samuel's daughter Amelia and in the left hand corner, Amelia's husband William Cudlip. The other side of the lot contains the graves of daughter Mary Jane, her husband William Tredray, their son Ernest and the more recent graves of Anthony F. and Grace T. Lorasch
