Biography

Mr Benjamin Gray, who died recently, was one of the diminishing band of early Hawke’s Bay settlers.   Born in Longham, Lincolnshire, he left England at the age of three.  In 1875 he arrived at Napier with his parents, the late Mr and Mrs Upsall Gray, in the ship Ellen Denny.  After spending his earl life in Grays Road, Hastings he first worked at Edenham Station. Elsthorpe.  Later he carried on business as an agricultural contractor on the Heretaunga Plains.  In 1906 he went to Waipawa and began farming at "Waimarino" Ruataniwa, where he farmed successfully until recently.  He served on the Waipawa County Council from May, 1929 until May 1938, representing the Onga riding.   He married Eliza Mary Moore, a member of another old pioneer family.  Besides his widow he is survived by a family of four sons and three daughters, Lindsay (Len) Napier; Gwen (Mrs E M Willis), Argyll; Gordon and Jim, Ruataniwha; Upsall Lindsay, Waipawa; Lillian (Mrs J Cox), Hastings, and Peggy (Mrs J H Cooper) Hastings.
