Biography

'The most charming man in British Shoe Business" : Ludwig Israel, who later changed his first name to "Louis", was born 4  October, 1905 in Heilbron, Germany. He was the younger son in a family of shoe makers, so when he was very young he came to England to work for an uncle who had a ladies lingerie business. He started a business in London before World War II importing shoes from the continent. He spoke excellent French, passable Italian and Spanish and of course German. He married in 1934 Marjorie Jennie Morris, who was born in South Africa 23 May, 1911, but grew up in West Hampstead, London and worked as a coat and suit model in London before she wed. They had one child, Michael Andrew Israel, who was born in London at the Welbeck Clinic 24 March, 1937.  Louis Israel  became a British citizen and served in the British Army during World War II, helping to build portable landing runways for airplanes.  After World War II he restarted his shoe import business with Salvatore Ferregamo as his most prestigious client. After the death of his wife in 1979, he took several round-the world cruises, playing bridge. On return he married his bridge partner in London, Sarah Flack, and they lived in her tiny flat on the edge of Regents Park until he had a major operation and moved with Sarah into a care facility in Highgate. He died there 18 November, 1990.
