With the Photo & document scanner, you can use your mobile device to preserve old photos and historical documents by uploading them to your family tree directly through the MyHeritage app.
To access the scanner, please do as follows:
1. Open the MyHeritage app on your device.
2. Tap on the icon in the upper-left corner of the screen to open the app menu:
3. Tap on “Photos” and select “Scan photos & docs”:
You can also access the scanner directly from a person’s profile in your family tree, if you tap the + sign and choose “Scan photos”:
4. If not already enabled, you need to allow access to your camera to take photos with the app. Just tap “Settings” to change the current setting.
5. Go back to the scanner, and place the document or photo you want to scan over a flat surface. Place your device above the document or photo, and wait until the orange mask appears. This means the scanning area was detected by the scanner:
6. If the image or document is not scanned automatically, tap the capture button at the bottom of the screen.
7. A grid will appear on the scan.
If you’re not satisfied with the result (for example, if the capture is blurred), you can tap “Retake” to start again.
You can drag the corners of the grid around to adjust the document/image limit. By default the scanner will detect the borders of the document, but you can use the drag tool to crop it or adjust as you wish.
8. Once you’re satisfied with the selection, tap “Next”:
9. On the next page, you can rotate the scan, or add a filter to improve its visibility. Tap the middle icon to choose a filter.
Tip! The “Document” filter is a great option if you scanned an old record or a newspaper, as it will whiten the background and sharpen the text.
10. Tap “Save” to save the scan to the Photos section.
11. You can tag the person in the scan right away if you tap the label icon at the top, so that it will appear in the person’s profile in your family tree:
12. That’s it! Start again to scan more photos or documents to preserve and share your family history.
