My husband is an Utts. Long story about how the name got changed. Nobody seemed to know anything definite and any info we had was told to us by my mother-in-law who heard it from her mother-in-law. There was something about an Utts who came from England and there was supposed to be some ancestor from Holland. My son is interested in genealogy and is a member of Ancestry.com and he traced the family back to about the 1400s. He didn't have info about this town in Switzerland though. That could be very interesting.
I am a descendant of Johann Georg Utz who came to Virginia in 1717 as part of the 2nd Germana Colony. Apparently there are several families named Utz in Western Europe, I only know of mine and have no way of researching others. I thought I might be related to the Utzes of Pennsylvania who started the Utz Potato Chip company, I might get the family discount ; ) . Doesn't look like it though, unless it's so far back in Europe that the relation is virtually untraceable. The town name as an origin is just a theory of mine. I have other ancestors who married into my Utz family who came from Switzerland so I figured that without more info, that's as good a guess as any. The parts of Germany where they were living in the years prior to coming over to Virginia were Baden and Bavaria.
As far as Utts is concerned, I know for sure that it is an alternate form of the same name. There are several of them. I do not know how the different spellings developed.
Someone named Bill Utts researched this a number of years ago. Bill has since gone Home to be with the L-rd. John Utz came to Pennsylvania and settled in Mifflin County. One of his descendants had 19 children by 2 wives (he remarried after his first wife died). One or more of the kids from the 2nd marriage added a "t" to Utz and then someone in the following generation changed the "z" to an "s."
I will pass your info along to my son who does the research in the family. If you wish to contact him his email is firstname.lastname@example.org. Tell him I sent you. He has a membership to Ancestry.com and he traced the Utts line pretty far back. Somewhere in one branch of the family ancestors came from the Netherlands. I am not sure if that is in the Utts line or in the line of someone who married into the Utts family.
