Hi Kenneth, I am also descended from John Baird and Maria (Maraea) Lee. In the 1990s I received the birth certificate of John Baird. In the absence of a marriage certificate for this couple, the only certificate available is John's death certificate, which I can tell you are taking as fact. The death certificate was signed by John's son-in-law William Winder, and it is not factual.

John's name was actually John James Baird, son of Charles Bradford Baird, who was a bootmaker, and his wife Ann Burrows.

I know that John used the name Burrows quite often when signing his children's birth registrations. There was a Commander in the family, but that was John's Uncle's wife's fathers. John's grandfather was James Baird, and he was a soldier, born in Scotland, who was living at Fort Pitt, Chatham. I would be quite happy to send you a copy of John's birth certificate if you would like to have it. During the past year I have been putting my research onto Wikitree, and have added a biography.

I am descended from John's daughter Emma.

please get in touch if you would like me to send you a copy of John's birth certificate.   Pamela Rose.

My great-great-great-grandfather Charles Bradford Baird was a brother to William Baird who married Charlotte Nowell.

Their parents were James Baird and his wife Lililia, who were both Scottish. James Baird, as a returned soldier (Staff Sergeant) worked at the army hospital at Chatham until he died in 1828.

I have researched this Baird family in the 1990s.

Charles Bradford Baird's son John James Baird migrated to New Zealand in the 1850s, marrying Maraia Lee, daughter of John Lee and Sarah Timu, and establishing a large family in the Southland area.

Hi Will,

We are very......  distantly related by marriage......

William B. Baird married Charlotte Augusta Phillis Nowell in 1844 in Gravesend in Kent. The Nowell name is carried forward as a first name!

His daughter C/Kathleen married William Jarvis and I have tracked that family forward.....

I also tracked William and Charlotte's other children but had not found Harry's details. Was it him that emigrated?

I believe that William had a brother John Baird b.1810 as in one of the later censuses William is with him in Gillingham.

I have no details of William further back, nor any other siblings for him, but I believe I have found Charlotte's parents and grandparents.

Let me know if I can be of further help!

B

Hi, my great great Grandfather was George Stevenson Baird. George was the third son of James & Lililia Baird.George was born at the end of the 1818 & was Christened at St Marys Church, Chatham on the 1.1.1819.I had been searching for many years for his death & was surprised to find he had died in Sydney, NSW in 1898. His death certificate stated his father as James Baird (Army Officer) & Lililia Baird (nee Leny).I also found a marriage for Lililia Baird to a Joseph Jackson in Maidstone, Kent on 20.4.1828. Is it possible that she remarried? Her youngest daugther Ann was barely 1 year old when James Baird died?My great, great Grandfather's death certificate also states he was in Australia for nearly 38years.Did any other of James & Lililia's children come out to Australia? I would love to hear any info as I am finding it all very interesting & fun.

Best wishes Pam Dubber (nee Baird).

Hi again Pam Dubber,

However having said all that, it is surprising that Lililia remarried 2 months before James Baird died. James was buried at St. Marys church, Chatham on 2 July 1828. He may have been ill for some time, perhaps the fact that he was not in active service was due to War injuries - he may have been to the Napoleonic war.  For the last 14 years of his life he was based at Fort Pitt, in some capacity - Steward to the hospital etc.

I did a lot of research in the 1990s, it was sitting in my filing cabinet ready to be thrown out when I die, so over the past couple of years I have put it on Wikitree.  Recently I added photos, however I haven't got any photos older than that of John James Baird, son of Charles Bradford Baird - a nephew of your George Stevenson Baird.

All the best, if ever you are in Byron Bay, call in,

Pam Rose.

Hi Pam Dubber, nee Baird.

I am descended from your great great grandfather's brother Charles Bradford Baird. His son John James Baird migrated to New Zealand around the late 1850s. From information I received from a probable relative of yours Don Baird, who was living in Runaway bay, Gold Coast, at the time of the 1851 Census, Lililia was registered as Lililia Jackson aged 64, Widow, Victualer, born Scotland. She was living at Brook Street, Chatham, Kent.

However on her death certificate she was registered as Lililia Baird.

I have been unable to get the parentage of James Baird, who was registered at the baptisms of his children as Staff Sergeant, Steward of the Hospital, Fort Pitt etc. He was definitely born in Scotland.

Hi again Pam Dubber,

I know this was the correct Lililia, who had been married to James Baird, because she had living with her her son Charles Baird, his wife Ann, and their two younger children.  It would have been necessary for Lililia to remarry quickly after the death of her husband James Baird, because they living in the Army barracks at Fort Pitt, Rochester (next to Chatham) and she would have lost her accommodation after the death of James Baird.

Hi Everyone,

It is great to hear from you all. I have recently purchased a copy of James Baird (Steward of Fort Pitts, probate document). It is very difficult to read, but if I manage to translate the whole thing I will send the translation. It was at the National Archives in England. I have the following Information for James Baird. Born around 1780 (Scotland). His son, George Stevenson Baird's death certificate states Glasgow although this information was supplied by Georges son-in-law, John Robert Keyhoe. It was George's second marriage & he was quite old when he remarried, so I am not sure how reliable the information was? James died 9th January 1828. James wife was Lillilia Leny?? again from George's death certificate. She was born 1785 (Scotland) & died 21st September 1859. The date I have for Lillilia remarrying is 20.4.1828 to Joseph Jackson in Maidstone, Kent.

I have James & Lillilia both buried at The Town Hall Cemetery which is an overflow of St Mary's Church at Chatham. The gravestones have been set into the walls & it is a garden were people walk their dogs. I have a picture, but can not work out how to attach it.

I have James & Lillilia having 7 children; James Watson Baird Born 1815, Charles Bradford Baird: Born: 4.5.1817 - Died: 6.4.1905 Chatham, Kent, George Stevenson Baird: Christened:1.1.1819 - Died:27.1.1897 St Peters, Sydney Australia , William John Brooks Baird: Born 22.12.1822 - Died 18.3.1901, Portsmouth. & three daugters Mary Baird:Born 1822- Died: 21.5.1823. Janet Baird:Born: 17.10.1824 - Died:23.12.1824 & Ann Baird:Born: 7.2.1927 - Died:31.8.1856.

I think Charlotte is Charlotte Augusta Phillis Nowell Born 1822 Tavistock, Devon - Died 13.4.1899 Portsmouth. Charlotte's parents were William Nowell & Mary Ann Sutherland Vine. I have Mary Ann's father as Thomas Vine (Cornwall). Charlotte married William John Brooks Baird 8.7.1844 at Milton-Next-to-Gravesend,Kent.Did you know William & Charlottes son, William John Nowell Baird ( Staff Captain) wrote 2 books? Journals? Admiralty Notices to Mariners (1937) & Bering Sea & Strait Pilot (1920) both at Kew Archives?

I hope that their may be something useful for any of you seeking out your relatives.

Cheers Pam Dubber

Hi

I've just spotted this one - I am descended from Charlotte's sister Helen (aka Ellen), and I am intrigued by the fact that you say you have tracked Charlotte's parents and grandparents.  I have managed her parents, but am now stumped.  If you have anything any further back, I would love to know.  (Charlotte's daughter Augusta was witness to Helen's marriage in 1862)

 Best wishes

 Vivien
