Trying to locate my father. His name is Raymond Robert Gerard Lavoie. He may be using only one of his middle names. We know very little about his side of our family. We know he was born in Ludlow, Mass.; his birthday is Jan 28, 1952. He use to drive tractor trailer trucks, We have been told he was in the Military for a short period of time around 1976 or so. Siblings Ernest (Ernnie), Paul, Louise (Lucy), and Doris. His Parents were/are Lucien and Clarice Lavoie. He had four children with my mother Janet Lavoie (Cressotti), three boys and a girl (me). He also has three grandchildren. I do remember one of the last times I saw my father he was living on the corner of Center st. ans Steven Terrace in Ludlow, MA in that house that sits kiddy corner, with the water right behind it. That would have been around 1986 -/ a year. He may not want to have contact with us, but we would like to know the medical history, the family tree and where we come from. I have some medical problems that I am told are genetic. I do not know where they come from because my mother was adopted, sealed recorders and I have not seen my father since I was about 9yrs old, when we were still living in Springfield, MA. If anyone could help with any amount of information that would be great. Here is a Picture of my father with my oldest brother in 1977.
I think I located your family. We will start recent and work backwards. I located Lucien and Clarice Lavoie in Milford, Worcester, Massachusetts. Lucien was born in Rhode Island on 30 July 1915 and died in Milford July of 1984. Clarice was born 28 Dec 1914 and died Feb 1982 in Milford. My first step to confirm this is indeed your grandparents would be to find an exact date of death. I got these dates of death from the social security death index. This is the link to the Milford town clerk http://www.milford.ma.us/townclrk.htm#genealogy. It costs $10 for them to locate the death record and send it to you. I would definitely get an obituary. At random acts of genealogical kindness or www.raogk.com there is a volunteer in Worcester County that will look up obituaries from Milford. After you get the exact date I would contact them. I have had a lot of luck doing this. This will give you more information on your father's siblings, place of residence, possible married names and your grandmother's maiden name. All this will confirm that it is indeed your family.
Now if we determine that this Lucien is in fact your grandfather (which I am betting he is) then in 1930 he was living in Holyoke..same county as Ludlow with his father Jeremiah age 45, a paper mill worker born in Rhode Island. Both of his parents are French Canadian and were born Canada. Lucien mother is Maria she is 51 born and she was born in Canada. Her native language was French. Both her parents were born in Canada. She immigrated to the US in 1895.
I also found the family on the 1920 census in Holyoke as well. The mother's name is Ismarie....remember census takers are human too! Lucien is the eldest age 4, Emille (George E in the 1930 census) and Roger age 1. Roger disappears before the 1930 census; meaning he probably died. Jeremiah is age 35 and Marie is 41. Jeremiah is a paper mill worker. I located Jeremiah's WWI & WWII draft cards. His birth date is 23 Sept 1884 in Central Falls, Rhode Island. So Jeremiah and Marie died post 1930. This would means that when a death date is located there will probably be an obituary.
We know the family is French Canadian. Jeremiah was born in Rhode Island. There are a lot of Lavoie's in Rhode Island around his time of birth. Similiar names then appear in Massachusetts. It is probably a fairly large or extended family that requires more digging. I could not find a vioable census record for Jeremiah prior to 1920. My suggestion would be to obtain Jeremiah's birth record from the state of Rhode Island. Here's the link http://www.health.ri.gov/chic/vital/index.php. This will name his parents. If you find this information and need help locating earlier census records, I'd be happy to help.
I know this is lots of information..the first step is the death record/obits. That way you can find your grandmother's maiden name which will begin the search for her family.
