Name change records in Scotland

My family's surname changed from Dinnel to Donald.  I have managed to narrow it down to 1920-1926 but where would the records be for this?  How would I find out why they changed their name?  I cannot find anything for this please help.

Hi Sheonna

I was born and raised in Saltcoats and have the DINNEL(s) in my line also as does a lady named Ann I know. We both live in Australia; she in Queensland and I in Western Australia.

To answer your question, there was no formal change of names. DINNEL(L) became DONALD which became MacDONALD. Ann completed extensive research on the DINNEL(s) using "Scotland's People" website; Birth, Death and Marriage and Census records. I would venture her research is as accurate as can be achieved short of that conducted by a professional genealogist.
