I see over and over all across the Internet incorrect Hughes information continuing to be posted. Does anyone do research anymore? It seems people just blindly cut and paste every tree they find and place it into their own--and voilá, it is GOSPEL. Errors, errors, errors!
The 1820 Smith Co,TN census says: Hughes, Simon Sen (NOT Lew!). "Sen" is the abbreviation for "Senior." "Lew" is someone's incorrect guess who does know how to read the old writing. The Simon Hughes who m Betsy Coleman Bigger was born 26 Jan 1778 VA and died 1858. Betsy Coleman Bigger was born 20 Jan 1780 VA and died 1851 Smith Co, TN. Simon and Betsy are last seen in the 1850 Smith Co, TN census. They were married 12 Jan 1803 Prince Edward Co, VA. This Simon's parents were John Hughes Sen and I *believe* Sally Tarlton. And this John Hughes Sen (also listed in the 1820 Smith Co, TN census this way) is NOT John Lew Hughes, as is also incorrectly posted everywhere.
Simon Hughes Sen is my 4g grandf; his daughter Polly P. married Bird Nichols c1812. Simon Sen was probably born c1740 Cumberland Co, VA; his will was probated "in the November Term 1823" of court Smith Co, TN. He was the second husband of Martha "Patty" Biggers. They married c1782, probably in VA. Their first child (of 5), John B. (Beverly? or Biggers?) Hughes was born 22 Jun 1783 Goochland Co, VA. Their other children were: Martha "Patsy" Flemming Hughes (married William Flippin Flowers); Nancy M. Hughes (married Samuel Brown Robinson); Simon P. Hughes married Mary P. Hubbard (and this Simon and Mary had a son Simon P. Hughes [good grief, they're everywhere!] who became Governor and Supreme Court Justice in Arkansas.)
Martha "Patty" Biggers' first husband was Robert Douglas--his funeral was 21 Jan 1781 in Louisa Co, VA. See "The Douglas Register" for a lot of Hughes information.
Simon Hughes Sen and Mrs. Martha "Patty" Biggers Douglas were married c1782.
Simon Hughes and Miss Betsy Coleman Bigger were married 12 Jan 1803.
Bottom line....2 different Simon Hugheses m 2 different Bigger/s women. *Probably* Simon Hughes Sen and John Hughes Sen are related, but I have not yet proved a connection.
Would love your comments, corrections, questions........
