Who is Harriet Abney (or Abner) Richardson's mother?
Harriet was born about 1841 according to the 1850 Census which lists her birthplace to be Illinois. According to her death record, she was born 3 Jun 1840. She died 22 May 1885 and was married to James Alfred Richardson.
Her father is John (or Jonathon) Abney III or John Abney Jr. he was born in 1803 in Estill County, Kentucky. He married Matilda McCarty in 1822 in Estill County, Kentucky. They had the following children: James b. 1824, Charlotte b. 1830, Sarah b. 1830, Luvenia b. 1833, Emeline b. 1834, Josiah b. 1838.
At some point Matilda McCarty died. John Abner married Rebecca Ball and they were living in Clark, Cheriton, Missouri, during the 1850 Census. Harriet is listed as 9 years old. Younger siblings are William Madison Abney b. 1845, John Jefferson b. 1851, and Esther V. b. 1855. We know this is the correct family because older children who were Matilda’s are listed with this family.
Family history says that Harriet was the daughter of the first wife, Matilda, who died in childbirth, but also said that John Abner married his second wife in 1844. We have been unable to substantiate Matilda’s death, John’s marriage to Rebecca, or found Harriet’s birth record to ascertain who her mother is.
To complicate things, we have a Sheraton Co., Missouri Land office record for John Abney on 24 April 1820, and 1 June 1845 Fayette County, Missouri. In between time, he appears to be married in Kentucky, had a child in Illinois, and then resettled in Missouri. There are generations of John or Jonathon Abney or Abners who are possible cousins as well.
