I remember back in the 80s or 90s I saw where a company was selling books of surnames and targeted it to the people with those last names. Those book, allegedly gave the history of that family surname. For example, the last name Jefferson, the name of the book would be The Book of Jeffersons. And the book detailed names in each state, and country along with addresses.
I wish I had bought one of those books. Did some searching online to see if the company still exists but could find no menion of this online. Just curious if anyone else had run across this and might have some knowledge on it.
I am in South Africa and I have traced my line to a George and Mary Ubsdell born Talbot.
Their son George Ubsdell immigrated to South Africa in 1820 with hiswife Betsy (Elizabeth) Ubsdell. Does anyone have any info on George or Marys' line back? I found George's dates to be 1771-1846 and Mary someone thinks was born in 1775? If anyone has ANY more information I would greatly appreciate it.

I am new here and have been doing research on Croatian ancestry. I've come across birth, baptism and christening records with some having a cross sign above the individuals name. Would anyone know what that symbol would mean?
