I'll start with an introduction. My name is Thuy-linh, I'm a 21 year old Vietnamese. I have a story to share with you all and hopefully I can be pointed in the right direction on this search for my grandfather.
Back when the Vietnam War was taking place, my grandmother met an American soldier. I don't know how their relationship worked, considering the language barrier, but my grandmother does know very little english. I guess it was enough to work between them. Anyway, my grandmother got pregnant with my mother. Her father, a man with pride and love for his country, did not approve of their relationship. He was a white man and a man who was fighting against his country. He forbid the two to continue seeing each other, and my grandmother was the kind of woman who put her family before others. She wasn't about to run off with this man that she only met for not that long. He told my grandmother that he would come back for her and that he would send her things to support their unborn child. My grandmother refused and things eventually ended between them. So when my grandfather went back to America, my grandmother's brother burned pictures or anything that tied the army man to his little sister's life until it was nothing but ashes. The sad part is, my mother was born into this world without a father and with her half-white ethnicity, was teased and bullied by her peers. She still toughed it out, though. I always want to believe that she got that toughness from my grandfather -- a man willing to give up his own life to fight in the name of his country.
I've asked my grandmother to tell me everything she remembers about him, which is very little. She thinks his name was "Bo" and that he had a wife and child(ren?) back home.
And I even asked my mother if she was ever interested in finding him, but she said no. I, on the other hand, am very curious on this family that I have never met or know anything of.
I guess, my question is, if someone in my situation -- someone who knows very little on a person -- how would they find their lost grandparent? Where would I even begin?
