I found an obituary in the 26-Sept-1994 edition of "The Tennessean" for Willie HOOVER COLEMAN, age 88, of Murfreesboro. Her survivors were listed as daughter Frances MESSICK of Murfreesboro, daughter Dorothy SHRUM of Michigan, son Foster COLEMAN of Murfreesboro, and brother Youree HOOVER of Nashville.
The 1940 census is the most recent census available. On it I found this family in Civil District 23, Rutherford Co, TN:
COLEMAN, Lee age 51 b. TN
wife Willie age 30 b. TN
son Lawrence age 16 b. TN
dau Frances age 7 b. TN
dau Darthy age 6 b. TN
son Lee age 4 b. TN
son Foster age 2 b. TN
Living next door is a Mrs. Sallie Coleman, age 72, and her son Calvin, age 45. These might be Lee's mother and brother.
So, if Dorothy was 6 in 1940, she was 23 when your father was born in 1957.
There's a TN birth record for Dorothy Dean COLEMAN born 6-Mar-1934 in Rutherford Co, TN, daughter of Lee COLEMAN and Willie Leslie HOOVER.
I also looked in the 1940 census for a Robert JAMES with a brother named Carl. I found this family who also lived in C.D. 23, Rutherford Co:
JAMES, Arthur age 42 b. TN
wife Lizzie Mai age 37 b. TN
son Robert age 18 b. TN
son Fred age 16 b. TN
dau Dixie Anna age 14 b. TN
dau Dorthy age 10 b. TN
son Caral age 7 b. TN
dau Yuvonnie age 4 b. TN
dau Patsy Ann age 6/12 b. TN
Robert would have been 12 years older than Dorothy COLEMAN. His younger brother "Caral" would have been nearly her same age.
There's a family connection in that in 1937 William Martin COLEMAN, son of Lee COLEMAN, married Mattie May JAMES, daughter of Arthur JAMES.
I just did a lot of google searching using various combinations of Dorothy's name and found a few things. I think she might still be living as I could not find an obituary or a listing in the Social Security Death Index. If your grandmother is still alive she's 82. She might be willing to talk to you. It looks like her husband's name was Charles SHRUM. I think she also had a daughter named Heidi who married Carlos MUNIZ. This page has some contact info on it, but I don't know if it is current:
wow this is actually pretty good and may be pretty correct in being the oine ive actually made contact with someone that knows a dorothy in michigan she lives in a nursing home now actually found this out today thanks for the help! if you find anything else let me know seems to be connecting very well wish i had my fathers adoption record would be easier to know but cant since hes an ass lol but thank you
I tried to see if I could find a marriage record for Dorothy and Charles SHRUM, but couldn't. I did find in the 1940 census a Charlie Fay SHRUM, age 5, living in CD 21, Rutherford Co. His parents were Henry and Mamie SHRUM and he had a twin brother named Henry Ray. That is perhaps why someone in your family thought she married a Ray.
I found a voter registration list that says Dorothy Dean SHRUM register in Warren, Macomb Co, MI ini 2004. Do you know where her nursing home is? If at all possible, I would try writing her a nicely worded letter explaining who you are.
It looks like her brother, Foster COLEMAN, is also still living. If contacting Dorothy doesn't work you might try tracking him down.
thanks well my contact im talking to says there is a shrum family reunion sunday an she will find out what she can as she has no idea about the situation so i think ill find out if this is the right woman or not thanks for your on it btw seems to connect really well on what i have sheesh hoovers n messicks could be family lol i went to school with some of them lol
I am looking for Joshua Robert Frady who was born on 16 Jan 1985 in Los Angeles, CA. I am asking for a friend of ours. The name is his birth name and he would have been adopted out of Los Angeles county. We don't know what his adopted name is or if he has moved out of the area. If you would like to get in touch, please email me.
I am looking for the children of Richard Kerns, that passed away in 1967. Ann Marie, Candace Lee, Kimberly Sue, Sherry Lou, Wanda Jean and John A these are the name I was told...they may have been changed... I would love to make a connection if possible....You have more family out there!!
My mother was born Estelle Voorhees, a twin in May, 1921. She was given up for adoption by her mother Alice Gustafson from Chicago.
Birth father was listed as Ted Voorhees, deceased; believe his full name to be Ted Victor Voorhees as we have located a marriage license for Ted and Alice. Although Ted was listed as deceased, we believe Ted & Alice were separated.
Believe Ted later moved east, to Indiana and/or Pennsylvania.
Copies of marriage license and birth records for twins available! No record of divorce found.
My maternal grandfather was Ted Victor Voorhees. He died in 1968. He was married at the time of his death to Margaret G. Voorhees. I do not know the year of their marriage. My mother Virginia Gail Voorhees was born in 1925, followed by two sisters. My mom has since passed. There was a rumor in the family about a prior marriage. Ted was a Methodist minister, seving in Stateline, NY, Monessen, PA, McKeesport, PA and as prison chaplain at the State peniteniary in Pittsburgh.
I do not know how/when he was in Chicagoland. There are two surviving members of that union, both in their 80's.
Thank you so much for responding to my post! It sounds as if we very well may have had the same grandfather. My mother and her twin brother (who died in infancy) were born May 1, 1921 in Chicago. The twins birth certificates list only the father's last name "Voorhees" as deceased. Earlier census records indicate that Ted V Voorhees lived in the Gustafson home and a marriage certificate indicates that he married Alice Gustafson, my mother's birth mother. Mom was also told that her father was a Methodist minister.
It was one of my mother's greatest desires to find some of her birth family. She passed away in 1971 and I have wanted to honor her memory by finding them for her. Thanks to a dedicated daughter and son-in-law we have learned all that we know over the past year.
Do you have contact information for your two aunts? I would very much like to reach out to them. I would also like to invite you to my family site so that you can review pictures of my mother and know more of my family.
Thank you again for responding to my post. I hope to hear from you again soon.
