I am resident in the UK but I need to find my grandparents South African marriage certificate - apparently the South African archives only have records of civil marriages. For church records one has to go to each church .... BUT there is the Family Records Centre (run by the LDS) in all the main centres and they apparently have microfilm records of all the church marriages .... the problem is trawling through all the microfilm to find the one document!
I don't have the specific details of their marriage which REALLY complicates things but, to narrow things down, according to my grandfather's death notice they were married in Johannesburg. My uncle, their first child, was born in Bleomfontein in 1898 so one would assume that their marriage was around 1896 or so ... but might have been in Bloemfontein????
My grandfather was Jewish (from an orthodox family) and born in the UK. She was born in Cradock, SA from Methodist or Presbyterian stock so it would seem logical that they were either married in court or in a Methodist or Presbyterian church as the children were brought up as Christians and he was cut off from his family because he "married outside the faith" so there was no Jewish wedding ceremony!
Would someone be prepared to put in the hard yards in searching for this? It might be very time consuming or could suddenly get a breakthrough quickly.
If someone is prepared to do this, I would suggest a call or a visit to a Family Record Centre, outline the search to them and they will give guidelines as to how to proceed and they will provide lots of other help too. A visit to the Archives might also prove useful to search the civil marriage records.
Please consider this and let me know what you think and what you feel is fair remuneration for time and transport costs etc and if anyone wants to proceed I will send her all the information I have. Hoping someone can assist.
Hi, I'm trying to find my great grandparents. My grandmother was Winifred Constance Clarke born in Fort Beaufort, South Africa on 9th July 1892 and died in Zimbabwe on 5th February, 1956. She married Norman Maxwell Tidbury on 16th October 1917. If you know her please get in touch.
I am searching for Gurine Andersen Haug, born Jan. 20 1873 in Vinger Norway. Emigrated to Natal, South Africa Jan 17 1902 with the ship 'Angelo' from Kristiania Norway. We know she lived in South Africa and that she got married, maybe to a Swedish man, but we do not really know. He might have been in the "gold business", but we do not know that for sure eighter. Anyone out there who can give me a tips where to look, or better if you have some information:-)? I am stuck!

I'm trying to find the death notice/ record for what I believe is my grandfather, who seems to have been a bit of a mystery to the rest of the family. My mother was adopted, but from talking to other sides of the family we know he left for South Africa from England in 1950, and was a violinist.
I think I’ve found his memorial stone in a Durban crematorium, but when I search the National Archives of South Africa, I can’t find a record for him at all. The information I have from the stone is his date of birth (17/02/1920) which matches his records in England, and a death date of 14/03/1991.
Are there any other sources which could help with finding out more about him?
