We are try to find information on my Great Grandad Robert Edward Cochrane and Anna Margaretha Hattingh.
Robert Edward Cochrane was born in Cork, Ireland we think on the 6/6/1888 but could be 1889.
He died in Boksburg South Africa in l1950's or early 1960's but not sure.
Cork is not a definite place of birth, we also have County Down and Dublin but we don't know. We have been advised he had a brother called Alexander Cochrane and he immigrated to Australia and Robert went to South Africa.
On Robert Edward Cochrane and Anna Margaretha Cochrane 2 oldest daughter birth register as a witness there is an Alexander and Grace Cochrane on them but not sure if that is his parents of sibling.
We don't know his parents names and where they are from but would love to know.
Anna Margaretha Hattingh was born on the 13/9/1983, we don't know where.
Died on the 7/12/1974 and we have been told that her ashes are at the wall on Rememberance in Petoria.
Anna Margaretha Hattingh married Robert Edward Cochrane and had 6 children.
Children names:- Mona Ellis (Born 27/7/1913 - Died 2004 - Husband Percy Desire Shaw),
Eileen (18/2/1915 - Died 10/2/1973 - Husband George Van Rensburg),
Dorothy (Born 29/7/1917 - Died 2004 - Husband Jozefus Johannes Labuschagne ),
Robert (Born 26/3/1918 - Died 1/1/1970 - Blanche - Wife ),
George ( 3/12/1921 - Died 4/11/1986 - Wife Doreen) and
Cecil Cochrane (Born 8/2/1027 Johannesburg - Died 13/5/2004 - Wife Enid Lorraine Lee - My Grandparents).
Robert Edward Cochrane left Anna Margaretha Cochrane when Cecil was 6 weeks old and had another daughter called Pamela Cochrane. We are not sure on her birth date and where but are lead to believe she was born on the 1/7/1927. We have no idea who the mother is and if there are any other chilren.
Anna Margaretha Cochrane divorced Robert Edward Cochrane, don't know the date and married another man with the surname Bredenham or Bredenhan. She died with this surname but some say she died a Cochrane, not sure.
I dont know South Africa very well anymore as i have not lived there for 21 years and finding it very hard find the information with the different areas.
I have found some information but not much and would really appreciate it if you could please help and advise me.
I am resident in the UK but I need to find my grandparents South African marriage certificate - apparently the South African archives only have records of civil marriages. For church records one has to go to each church .... BUT there is the Family Records Centre (run by the LDS) in all the main centres and they apparently have microfilm records of all the church marriages .... the problem is trawling through all the microfilm to find the one document!
I don't have the specific details of their marriage which REALLY complicates things but, to narrow things down, according to my grandfather's death notice they were married in Johannesburg. My uncle, their first child, was born in Bleomfontein in 1898 so one would assume that their marriage was around 1896 or so ... but might have been in Bloemfontein????
My grandfather was Jewish (from an orthodox family) and born in the UK. She was born in Cradock, SA from Methodist or Presbyterian stock so it would seem logical that they were either married in court or in a Methodist or Presbyterian church as the children were brought up as Christians and he was cut off from his family because he "married outside the faith" so there was no Jewish wedding ceremony!
Would someone be prepared to put in the hard yards in searching for this? It might be very time consuming or could suddenly get a breakthrough quickly.
If someone is prepared to do this, I would suggest a call or a visit to a Family Record Centre, outline the search to them and they will give guidelines as to how to proceed and they will provide lots of other help too. A visit to the Archives might also prove useful to search the civil marriage records.
Please consider this and let me know what you think and what you feel is fair remuneration for time and transport costs etc and if anyone wants to proceed I will send her all the information I have. Hoping someone can assist.
Hi, I'm trying to find my great grandparents. My grandmother was Winifred Constance Clarke born in Fort Beaufort, South Africa on 9th July 1892 and died in Zimbabwe on 5th February, 1956. She married Norman Maxwell Tidbury on 16th October 1917. If you know her please get in touch.
