I am looking for members of the Reynold's family tree. I can't find much on my grand father's family tree. I knew him and his name was Louis E. Reynolds. Now my aunt didn't believe that he had a middle name, but gave himself the middle initial E because he was getting somebody else's mail & visa versa with the same name. However, he had a son named James Edward Reynolds so I believe that my grand father's middle name was Edward.
I know that he either was born in or raised or both in Tomah Wisconsin, he had one sister at least that I know of named Edith Reynolds. I don't know her married name, but I do know that Edith moved to Hegwich, Illinois. I know this because either my grandparents either lived with Edith or lived close by her as they also moved to Hegwich, Illinois. I know that Edith was married, but didn't have a good marriage & had many many children. My aunt Dorothy Reynolds believed that Edith had at least 20 or more children. Possibly a set of twins. One of Edith's children died when another one of her children tried to pick the baby up and dropped it on the floor. My grandfather helped support Eidith's children until he married my grandmother.
One of Eidith's daughter's name's were possibly Lyndia.
My grandfather married Thelma Louise Powell from Missouri. At the time of living in Hegwich, Illinois my grandparents had only 2 children. Dorthy Marie Reynolds and Donald Louis Reynolds and later had my uncle James (Jimmy) Edward Reynolds and my mom Patricia Ann Reynolds. There were 13 years difference between my mom and aunt.
I know that my grandfather's mother's 1st name was Myria or Mira and last name started with a "D", I don't have that last name with me right now.
My grandfather was married before my grandmother to a woman named Irene. I don't know her last name. I know for sure that grandpa Louis Reynolds had at least one daughter with Irene named Laura Reynolds that moved to Maine. I met her once as a little girl. However, some enlistment paper's that I found of my grandfather's show that at the time of enlistment he had 3 children, not one. This would have been b4 my grandmother's time.
I believe that my grandfather was born in March of 1884. I have the exact date, but not with me.
So please if any Reynold's family from Edith Reynold's being her maiden name and lived in Hegwich, Illinois reads this please contact me on facebook under Sandra Holland in Portage, Indiana.
My generation is the last of the Reynolds family besides my cousin's & our kids of which currently don't care about the family tree. I don't want my mom's family to die out!
I can't find much on them. Just my grandparent's names, town & state that my grandfather was born/raised in, is mother's 1st name for sure & his mother's possible last name & my grandparent's siblings names.
Grandparent's were raised in a tuff time so they didn't talk much about thier family's. I also know that my grandfather didn't know his father & was raised by his grandparents.
I know that when my aunt Dorthy and uncle Donald Reynolds were young and lived in Hegwich there was a fire & they lost a lot. That is when they moved to Indiana. I know also when my mom Patricia was young they had another fire. I do have some old pictures mostly destroyed, but some that are ok. But I don't know their names of the people in the pictures.
My uncle Donald Reynolds had a child (unknown) by a girl (unknown) I believe when he lived in Hegwich. But her parent's didn't like my uncle & they were unmarried & parent's sent her away & he never seen her nor the child again. I was told that it destroyed him & he became a severe alcoholic & he died at a very young age. Late 30's or early 40's.
Hi, I'm not related but thought I would look around and see if I could find any useful info for you.
In the 1940 census Louis REYNOLDS, age 46, b. WI, wife "Selma", age 33, b. MO, and children Donald, age 11 and Dorothy, age 9, are living in Chicago, IL.
In 1930 Louis, Thelma and Donald are in Greenfield, Monroe Co, WI. Louis states that both of his parents were born in MN
In 1920 Lewis, age 26, wife Irene M., age 26, and children Ervin G., 8, Joseph C., 6, and Laura L., 4, are in Greenfield, WI. Lewis states his father was born in PA and his mother in MN.
In 1910 there's a single, 17 yr old Lewis REYNOLDS living as a hired man in the household of Sherman and Lucretia AUSTIN in Washington, Wells Co, ND. This Lewis states both parents were born in MN. Mrs. AUSTIN was also born in MN.
Thanks for the info. I had gotten up to the 1930's on my grandparents & yes that is my grandparents. I believe that it said that my grandfather gave the census in 1940 & being that he only had a 4th grade education he obviously spelled my grandmother's name wrong as Selma. Her name was Thelma. Those children, Donald & Dorothy are my aunt & uncle.
I did see where in the 1930 census where Louis my grandfather said that both his parents were botn in MN. I was stuck here as my grandfather told me that he was from Pennsylvainia & worked in the coil mines & that we were Pennsylvania Dutch. I was a kid so maybe he just lived there. I think that my aunt may have also mentioned it. So I think my grandfather got confussed on where his parents were both born on this census. Because as was told your next sentence my grandfather says his father was born in Pennsylvania.
What I am most curious about is where did you find the information in 1920 about my grandfather's 1st wife Irene & their 3 kids???????? I find this very, very interesting that indeed that my grandfather had 3 other children (2 of which our family didn't know about. I don't think either my mom nor aunt new about Ervin G nor Joseph C. (Did it state that they were Reynolds)? (Can you copy & past that info or send me that site that you found that info at? (I would greatly appreciate it). It is sad my grandfather never talked about these children. (I met Laura once as a child, so we knew about her).
You see when my grandfather did talk about Irene he was in his 70's or 80's, I wasn't around him much b4 then. He just to say that Irene was a I guess you could say to put it nice a Lady of the night! So maybe he didn't think that those 2 boys were his might be why he didn't talk about them. Now all the kids with my grandmother are now gone! So I can't ask them. Laura would have been older then my grandmother's kids & lived in Maine is all that I know & is probably gone too!
I am also very interesed in where you found the 1910 information on my grandfather.
You see another interesting story about my grandfather is my aunt and mom told me that they didn't know who his real father was and believed that his father was his grandfather or uncle. Because of that they were going to take my grandfather out in the woods & kill him! Instead he was raised by I am assuming that he went to live with his other grandparents.
So I am thinking that Sherman & Lucretia Austin in Washington, ND were also relatives especially since my grandfather's mother was born in MN.
I believe that my grandfather's mother's name was Myra Dennet according to the 1940 Census. Born in MN about 1887, lived in Chicago in 1940. Her father was born in Canada & her mother in New York.
That is all that I have on my grandfather Louis E. Reynolds, born March 19, 1893 & died */5/1979. I can't find anything on his sister Edith Reynolds, which lived closer to me in Hegwich, Illinois or Chicago, Illinois. I know that she had many, many children. I assumed that she was older because my grandfather helped her financially with her kids because their father was a drunk! But She may have been younger!
My grandmother his wife Thelma Louise (Powell) Reynolds is the hardest of my family to find info on. I am trying to prove that she was Cherokee Indian. All I know about her is that she was born in Missouri, where I don't know! She was born 3/24/1907 in Missouri & died in Hammond, Indiana on 1/13/1973. I know that she had at least one brother named Samuel Powell. I know that her mother died when my grandmother was about 18 months old. I know that at some point and time my grandmother's grandparents raised her.
I was told by the Missouri archives that it was illegal to claim that you were indian b4 1910. I was told that my grandfather met my grandmother at work at the train station in Missouri when he either was in the service or right when he got out of the service. So I assumed that they got married in Missouri b4 moving to Wisconsin. I am assuming by my uncle Donald's date of birth of July 25, 1928 that my grandparent's may have gotten married around 1927 sometime.
I don't know my grandmother's parent's names. Only that my aunt called her by grandma Powell. I do know what grandma Powell looked like though. My aunt gave my cousin grandma Powell's antique picture. Her husband was not in the picture. There may have been 3 children in that picture, but I am not sure and can't find out from my cousin as she never responds to my questions.
But thank you for your help and please let me know where you obtained that last bit of information from 1920 & 1910. I would love to know.
I see that you live in Canada. Well as I mentioned my grandfather's grandfather was from Canada so you never know we could be related after all. LOL
I am still reseaching if indeed Myra (Dennett) Reynolds was my grandfather's mother. My aunt did tell me that her name was Myra.
I found the 1910 and 1920 census records at www.familysearch.org
I went poking around again and you are correct in your assumption that Sherman and Lucretia AUSTIN were related to Louis. I found a death record for their son, George AUSTIN, which names his parents as William Sherman AUSTIN and Lucretia Mae REYNOLDS.
I found a possible match in the 1885 MN state census for Fairview, Lyon Co.
REYNOLDS, Wm S. age 42 b. PA
Maria, age 42, b. PA
Charles L. age 17 b. OH
Wm. F. age 16 b. IA
Walter age 14 b. MN
John age 12 b. MN
Laura age 8 b. MN
Lucretia age 4 b. MN
This family was also in the 1875 state census and the 1880 federal census.
I found a WI marriage record for Lucretia M. REYNOLDS to William N. AUSTIN on 16-Apr-1899 in Monroe, WI. Bride's parents were William Sini REYNOLDS and Maria L. CARTER.
I don't understand how Myra DENNET could be your grandfather's mother if she was born in 1887 and he was born in 1893?
I looked for further info about Ervin and Joseph REYNOLDS but couldn't specifically pin them down.
Here's the 1900 census for Byron & Scott, Monroe Co, WI:
REYNOLDS, W. S. b. Apr 1841 in PA, married 35 yrs, father b. NY, mother b. PA
wife Maria L. b. Dec 1843 in PA, 8 children born, 7 children living, both parents b. PA
dau POWELL, Laura b. Dec 1877 in MN, widowed, 3 children born, 2 children living
son REYNOLDS, John W. b. Jan 1872 in MN, single
grandson POWELL, Lewis b. Mar 1892 in WI
granddau POWELL, Olive M. b. Apr 1895 in WI
I think the above Lewis POWELL is probably your Lewis REYNOLDS.
There's a birth record for a Bessie POWELL b. 2-July-1897 in Rockbridge, Richland Co, WI. Her parents were Oliver P. POWELL and Laura REYNOLDS.
Even though Laura is listed as widowed in 1900, it appears that she, her husband Oliver POWELL, and children Olive, 14, and Archie, 7, are all living together in the 1910 census in Greenfield, Monroe Co, WI. Oliver was 26 yrs older than Laura.
I found Oliver in the 1900 census in Wellington, Monroe, WI, boarding with the ABBOTT family. He was born Sept 1851 in IL and was married 5 yrs.
In 1880 he appears in Oil City, Monroe Co, WI with his parents, Peter & Lavinia and siblings Orin and Alexander.
I see what you mean. As I said I still have to do some research on Myra Dennett Reynolds to verify that info. I do know for sure that my grandfather's mother's name was Myra Reynolds. Still not sure on her maiden name.
The library is closing. Got to go. Stay in touch. Thanks for the help.
Thank You, but those Powell's are not my ancestors. My grandfather Louis or Lewis Reynolds born in 3/19/1893 in Tomah, Wisconsin married my grandmother Thelma Louise Powell from Missouri born 3/24/1907
I was so excited to get back to you that I forgot my Reynolds folder at home with your e-mails.
So I printed it out again so I can tell you what I found out. It turns out that you Lisa Jean know more about my family than I do & you are not even related & don't even know me! LOL
When I last messaged you & told you that the info on the Powell family & that Lewis Powell was not my ancestors & that my Louis Reynolds was that Lewis Powell. I thought that because for one thing because my grandfather's last name is Powell. I thought for another thing it couldn't be because his 2nd wife's name, my grandmother's maiden name was Powell. So I thought he couldn't have married his relative or somebody with the same last name. Besides I knew for a fact that my grandmother was born in Missouri even those these Powell's were from Wisconsin. Then I got to thinking what if my grandma's brother moved out there it could be his in laws.
So I did some more reseach, but not until I went through all of my mom's paper work that she left behind. I use to think that my mom was a severe pack rat & it drove me crazy. But now I am glad that she did save everything especially when it came to things her family, especially kids wrote to her, cards, letters, pictures, ect. She did the samething with her dad's things.
I went through everything & holly smokes I couldn't believe what I found & what you said on your e-mail about what you found out about the Reynolds family that could be my ancestor's.
I found my grandfather's obituary. It said that he had one sister named Olive (Ollie) Steege of Tomah, Wisconsin. Where I knew my grandfather was born. Still not knowing her maiden name was not Reynold's.
The obituary also said my grandfather Louis Reynolds also had a brother named Archie Powell of Sparta, Wisconsin. (WHAM, THERE IS THE LAST NAME POWELL THAT YOU FOUND) I was still not convinced that this was my grandfather's brother. I thought that it might be a typo & it might be my grandmother's brother that moved to Wisconsin & maybe I had her bother's name wrong & her brother was not named Samuel.
I previously told you that my grandfather's sister's name was Edith. Duh, I don't know why I thought that because I now remember my mom & aunt talking about grandpa's sister aunt Ollie. I found lot's of picture's of Aunt Ollie too in my mom's things. A lot of them are partially distroyed or the people in it are kind of hard to see. But before my aunt died I took her some of those pictures to identify & she did & I wrote the names on the back's of some of them.
Apparently they spent a lot of time together or went back to see aunt Ollie or aunt Ollie came to Chicago to see them. Because there were a lot of my family with a lot of kids & aunt Ollie. For some reason I thought that my grandpa came to Chicago & lived with aunt Ollie. But I now know he came here to get a job in the Steel Mill's because that is where he worked back then. Called Youngstown.
I am now going to try to get my grandfather's war paper's for Louis Reynolds & pension papers for the 2 war's that he was in. He was in the Civil Wary in I think 1927 & 1942. But I don't think I am going to be able to access them at this time because I don't have a home internet. I got some things off the internet. But I am not sure if that is when he enlisted or got out. So that is what I want to try to find next.
Now I am going to reseach my great uncle Archie Powell that lived in Sparta, Wisconsin in 1979 when my grandpa died.
Also, in your e-mail about the Powell children it stated that their mother's name was Laura Powell. I didn't think that was my grandpa's mom. Because I had asked my aunt b4 she died if she knew what her name was & she said Myra. So that is what I thought that his mom's name was.
But my grandpa's 1st wife's name was Irene Marna or something similar forgot the name at home. But there was one letter off between's Irene's middle name & what my aunt told me that was her grandmother's name Myra. It turn's out that my aunt was mistaken.
I found proof that you were right & we were wrong about my grandfather's mom's name! My mom kept a 1921 post card that my grandpa wrote to his mom. Her 1st name was Laura! It looks like that she might have re-married after she was widowed by 3 kids father with the last name Powell. Because my grandfather wrote Mrs. Laura & I can't read the last name. But it started with an L. It is faded & my grandfather didn't know how to spell & his hand writing was hard to read anyway because of his spelling & pinmenship. (Awesome). This post card was sent to Tunnel City, Wischonsin and it said frog something on it.
I looked it up on the internet & there was the exact same post card. Whew Whooooooo! So cool. I calculated that his mother would have been about 44 years old then in 1921. My grand father was giving her the updates on his where abouts & asking her if she got paid by her employer & if not he would send her some money. So Sweet that my grandfather took care of his mother & probably his siblings since he was the oldest boy & his mother was widowed & might be why he only had a 4th grade education. Because he had to go to work to take care of them. I knew he went to work at a very early age.
Now another thing that you mentioned in your e-mail about the Powell family that you found out & why I didn't think that they were related to us. You mentioned that you thought that their Lewis Powell was my Louis Reynolds! (You were right again)
I think in my 1st e-mail reply back to you I mentioned that my grandfather was raised by his grandparents because they didn't know who his father was & I was told that they thought that it might be his grandfather or uncle & for that reason they were going to take him out & shoot him. But of course didn't & he was raised by his grand parents at least for a while.
Whala, that is exactly what happened & where he got the name Reynolds because that was his mom's maiden name & her married name was Powell. That is why his sister & brother had the last name Powell because they had a differnet father. It showed that their father's name was Oliver Powell Olive was probably named after him.
They census you showed that there was another sister named Bessie Powell born 1897. Your e-mail also showed that Laura was widowed, not sure when because you showed Oliver as dead in 1900's census, but alive in the 1910 census. Anyway at that time it showed Laura had 3 children with only 2 living.
Now as I figured. Laura would have had my grandpa when she was 16 years old. That is possible & does happen in this time & apparently in their time. Except back in there time it was unaceptable to be an unwed mother let alone a 16 year old unwed mother. (THAT AGE OF GETTING PREGNANT WOULD MAKE IT MORE UNDERSTANDABLE & BELIEVABLE OF THE STORY THAT I WAS TOLD THAT MY GRANDPA WAS RAISED BY HIS GRANDPARENTS BECAUSE THEY THOUGHT HIS FATHER AS HIS GRANDFATHER OR UNCLE. THERE WAS INCEST IN THOSE DAY UNFORTUNATELY! ALSO, A 16 YEAR OLD UNWED GIRL IN THOSE DAYS WOULD BARELY BE ABLE TO RAISE A SMALL CHILD! LAURA WAS UNMARRIED & THE BABY, MY GRANDFATHER WOULD HAVE TAKEN ON HER MAIDEN NAME OF REYNOLDS! & IT WAS HIS REYNOLDS GRANDPARENT'S THAT RAISED HIM AT LEAST UNTIL HIS MOTHER GOT MARRIED. I also believe that when my grandfahter's mom Laura became widowed or if her husband Oliver went off to war she moved back in with her parents & whom ever wrote that Census assumed that my grandfather's last name was Powell because his sister's name was Powell. AS YOU CAN SEE IN YOUR E-MAIL ABOUT POWELL IS SHOWED GRANDSON LEWIS POWELL & GRAND DAUGHTER POWELL.
Now why would it give the discription as grand children if they weren't living with their grandparent's & it was the grand parents that gave the Census. THAT CENSUS DON'T MENTION ARCHIE SO I AM ASSUMING THAT HE WAS NOT BORN YET & MAYBE THAT HIS FATHER OLIVER MAY HAVE BEEN OFF TO WAR OR WORKING IN ANOTHER STATE!
Oh yeah, that Lucretia My Reynolds - Austin that you said that lived with in 1910 in Washington, Wells Co, ND that you found a marriage license for married on April 16, 1899 in Monroe, Wi. (IF YOU HAVE THAT OR FOUND THERI MARRIAGE LICENSE CAN YOU E-MAIL ME THAT PLEASE) THAT WAS INDEED MY GRANDFATHER'S AUNT. THEY SEEMED TO ONLY BE 6 OR 7 YEARS DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HER & MY GRANDFATHER!
Now lets talk about my mom's 2 older 1/2 brother's & older 1/2 that you found info on. I told you that I knew that my grandfather's 1st wife's name was Irene & they had a daughter named Laura & they lived probaby in Tomah, Wisconsin or by there. You found info on them where they lived in Greenfield, Wisconsin. But you also found that they had 2 boys Evin G. & Joseph C. Reynolds. You couldn't find anything after that.
I don't remember my mom & aunt talking about them & don't know why. But did know about aunt Laura. Apparently my aunt Laura was named after my grandpa's mom!
Guess what????????/ I went through my mom's old pictures & on the back of it was the name Helen & it said to grandpa. Joe C. Reynolds daughter! WALLA AGAIN! WHOO WHOO!
So my mom & aunt did know about their 2 1/2 brother's & 1/2 sister. I believe that when my grandpa got out of the Civil War. I was told that he got off the train & he met my Grandma where ever she was working not far from the tain in Missouri. I believe that he took my grandma back to Wisconsin because he had 3 under age children there & he stayed there until they were of age & then moved to Chicago/Hegwich Illinois to work in the Steel Mill.
Those older 3 kids did know who my grandpa was, because there were pictures addressed to him stating give this picture to dad and/or grandpa!
I found childhood & marriage pictures of Laura's kids. 3 duaghter's & there is a note on one of them that there were also 2 boys. I found out that my aunt Laura married Edward F. Horalek. One of thier duaghter's names was Angela June Horalek & she married Rodney George Saberg on 9/6/1958. (So cool)
I have a picture of all the 5 Horalek kids & Ed coloring Easter Eggs. Just happen's to be close to Easter now! LOL
So it looks like we have become pen pals. I didn't think that existed anymore! I went from only having a little bit of info on my grandfather's family to you helping me & me looking through my mom's thing's after 8 1/2 years & now having lots of info all the way back to my great, great grandparents.
So thanks for that you have been an awesome big help!~
Oh, one more thing that I may have found out but still have to do more research. My grandpa's 1st wife Irene Myrna Reynolds. Well I tried to find her maiden name or her's & Louis Reynold's marriage certificate & found a cences instead from when she was 12 years old. I think she lived in New York. I forget & left it at home. But Irene's last name at the age of 12 was still Reynolds. If I am right after I do more research. I think I may find out that my grandfather's 1st wife may have also been his 1st cousin! (CRAZY) LOL
Talk about a Crazy family tree that I have found out:
My grandfather 1st wife maiden name may have been Reynolds may have been his 1st cousin
his 2nd wife's maiden Powell was also my grandfather's mom, sister & brother's last name!
I couldn't stop thinking about that & had to tell somebody! LOL
I am glad you are having such success with your family tree. You sound very excited and I am happy I was able to help. If there is anything else specific that you would like me to search for, just let me know.
My Grandfather was Daniel Edward Reynolds, His Father was Emery Otis Reynolds. I am looking for other family names. It was a big family and my info has been lost! Any input is a welcome blessing! Thank You!
