Michael Monaghan, my 2nd great grandfather, was born in Ireland (I think County Mayo) about 1808, and married there about 1838. Sons Patrick and John were born there per John’s tombstone in St. Michael’s cemetery, Holbrook, Iowa County, Iowa.
Seeking information with sources re:
--Maiden name, birth. death, marriage of Michael's wife, who was the mother of sons Patrick and John. Found Catherine Riley listed as mother of all five of Michael’s children on numerous Ancestry Trees but with no sources.
--Birth information with sources for Michael and the two sons would also be appreciated.
About 14 years after John’s birth, three more children were born—Charles (my great grandfather), and twins Michael Francis and Ellen.
The 14 year time lapse leads me to believe that Michael married twice. Catherine Riley probably died, either in Ireland or on the journey to America, and Michael married Catherine Sullivan. They may have married in Ohio where son Charles was born about 1854. The family settled in Iowa a year later. Any birth/marriage information and sources for Catherine Sullivan would be greatly appreciated. Also birth information for Charles.
In researching this, I checked:
— Michael’s will, which leaves property to wife Catherine, but no maiden name is given.
— Iowa marriage records for both Patrick and John, but parents’ name were not required at that time.
--Iowa marriage records for Charles and Michael Francis, which list their mother's maiden name as Catherine Sullivan
—1925 Iowa Census, page 2, asks for mother’s maiden name. For Charles, Catherine Riley is listed; for Michael, a corrupted spelling of Catherine Sullivan is listed. Unfortunately, Patrick, John and Ellen were all deceased by 1925 so can't check for them in that census .
Can anyone help verify any of this? Sources would be greatly appreciated.
I have been trying to locate my Father, Brian Francis Monaghan born in New Zealand (1941) for many years. I am one of his two other sons, Craig and Dean. My Mother is Lynette Ell.
I was shocked to see there is a family history on this site naming his father, George Patrick Charles Monaghan and relatives beyond as I had always been told his father was an Orphan.
Brian has siblings - Linda, John, Sheryl and Paul, Sheryl has past. The last time I saw Brian it was by chance, his Mum Peggy was in a hospital in Sydney in 1995, she has since past. I have since tried to find him.
I would like to find my Father, I would like him to meet my sons, I would like a chance to know him and for him to know me, life is too short.
Whoever provided the information on George Patrick Charles Monaghan - please e-mail me. Or Dad please make contact.

I am searching for any information on my grandfather, Horace Malcolm Monaghan. He was born in Randwick NSW Australia in 1896/7 to Walter Charles Monaghan and Theodosia Elizabeth Thorley. His brother were Charles E, Walter T and Harold. His sisters were Violet, Florence E and Edith. He passed away in 1967.
Walter Charles Monaghan came to Australia from New Zealand and settled initially in Newcastle, NSW where he met and married Theodosia. They moved to Sydney and settled around Randwick.
Horace married Mary Springhall in 1920 and they had two sons Harold and Ronald Eric. They were divorced in 1929.
Because ofo the marriage break-up I did not have the pleasure of knowing my grandfather and I would appreciate any information.
