I don't have membership on Ancestry.com. I am wondering how you know where James REID was born? I am looking at different census records. NY state 1875 says Germany, 1880 says Canada, 1900 says Scotland and 1910 says Ireland.
His father was born in Scotland and his Mother in Ireland. Jones was born in Ireland. I do not knee when they moved to Canada. I believe he came down to NY @1868. I think it was in one census report. I do not have any of my Grandfather Winslow's papers, but I had notes from him that. Both of his grandfathers were born in Ireland but were considered English. I don't think the Scotts would agree. The Winslow's were given land in Ireland for their services to the government.
Many of the Winslow families were torn during the Rev War. Some went to England and other points to not lose property. Others stayed and fought to keep what was built up here. The ones who went back to England and Ireland eventually came back to America within one or two generations.
I appreciate your help. The census records on ancestry are hard to rea.d. I like the way My Heritage has them open up and are readable. Did you find in the 1892 census the mention of Frederica's maiden name being Schulz or Schultz? Her nickname was Schulze. I have her baby grand piano. It had a hand written note on the piano bench button. "To my Beautiful Schulze, so you can play till your heart is content. All my love and admiration." Heinrich
I have a fellow in Germany who found them. I will reply with the new info you shared. His middle name was Wilhelm, so I will ask him to find the family roots if he can. I think I can invite you to Ancestry as a guest. Let me see how to do it and I will get back to you.
Thank you very much.
Peg Where are you in Canada? I want to go up next fall.
I am at 146 Lawrence Point Rd., Old Forge, NY 13420. Adirondack Winslows on Facebook.
I am not related, I just saw your post and thought I would look around to see what I could find. The only hint I see as to immigration is that iin 1855 it is record they were all born in Germany. The youngest child was only 5, so immigration had to be after 1850. Also they said they had been in Utica for a year. If everything in the census is to believe that narrows immigration to 1850 to 1854. However in later censuses the youngest girl claimed to be born in NY. If that is true, that means immigration between 1846, when her sister was born in Germany and 1850 when she was born in NY. Was there something that made you concentrate on 1852?
Are you looking to trace them further back or find out what happened to them after 1855? Was KELLNER their name in Germany and they used BILLINGS in the U.S.?
I have the 1855 image in front of me. Henry was 48, born Germany, occupation laborer. His wife is listed here as Fredrica, not Rebecca. She was 39. The children listed are Agust, 12, Lower, 11, Lena, 9, and Loueza, 5, all born in Germany. They were residents of Utica for 1 year.
I can only see a transcription for 1860, but Henry, age 65, Frederica, age 44, and Louisa, age 10, are still in Utica. Their birthplace is listed as Saxony. It could be that Henry's age is mistranscribed, or was just recorded incorrectly.
By 1875 Frederica is gone. The NY state census for Utica has this household:
BILLING, Henry, age 68, b. Germany, laborer
wife Sarah D. age 60 b. Germany
dau KEIZER, Louisa age 25, b. Oneida, widowed, Tailoress
KEIZER, Carrie age 8
KEIZER, Frank age 6
dau REED, Lena, age 27, b. Germany, Tailoress
REED, James H. age 28 b. Germany, Fireman
REED, Laura age 4 b. Oneida
REED, Louisa age 1 b. Oneida
I can not find Henry BILLING in the 1870 census. But I did find his daughter, Louisa KEISER, age 20, b. Saxony, with her husband, Andrew KEISER, age 25 b. NY, and children Caroline, 3, and Francis, 1.
I found an MA death record for Frank J. KEISER, age 23, b. Utica, NY, died 7-Sept-1893 in Hinsdale, MA. Occupation: Brakeman. Father: Andrew J. KEISER b. Utica, NY, mother: Louisa M. BILLINGS KEISER b. Germany.
It looks like Louisa never remarried. In 1910 she is living in Utica in the household of her daughter Caroline GORTON and Caroline's children, George & Charles.
