Verka’s War Hero Ancestors

Verka Serduchka, the alter-ego of comedian Andriy Danylko, represented Ukraine in Eurovision 2007 with her wildly popular “Dancing Lasha Tumbai,” which placed second in the contest.

Verka took a DNA test to learn about his heritage, and MyHeritage researched his family history to paint a fascinating picture of Verka’s ancestors
Both Verka's maternal great-grandfather, Illiya Homentovskiy, and his maternal grandfather, Ivan Vasilievich Biba, served in the army and died in defense of their land.

Iliya was stationed in Lublin in 1909. He was killed in battle during World War I on September 14, 1914.
Ivan was drafted into the army when the Nazis invaded Russia in 1941. He was killed by a German air bomb in Sevastopol. His wife, Maria Illinichna, and their daughter Svitlana (Verka's mother) were living in the center of combat in Stalingrad. Against all odds, they managed to survive.



Verka’s paternal grandfather, Semen Danylko, was born in 1906 in the village of Vakulentsi. He joined the Soviet army in October of 1943 and served in a telephone communication unit. He was awarded a Medal of Valor for his courage in laying and repairing telephone lines during combat in 1945.

Verka’s DNA is focused primarily outside his home country of Ukraine: he is 54.9% Baltic, 41.2% Balkan, and only 3.9% East European.
