A Spectacular Journey to Eurovision

Back in September, we were so excited to announce that we had been named the Presenting Partner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2019, which took place on May 12–18, 2019 in Tel Aviv. Eurovision is the world’s largest live music event, watched by an average of 200 million people around the world. Over the last few months, we delighted MyHeritage and Eurovision fans with fun and exciting activities as we counted down to the Eurovision final.

Here are some of the highlights of our journey to Eurovision:

Eurovision Bus Tour

The Eurovision Bus tour kicked off our journey to Eurovision 2019, bringing all the color and fun of the Eurovision Song Contest to fans in 14 cities across Europe. Eurovision fans had the opportunity to rock out to their favorite Eurovision songs on our fully-equipped karaoke system, meet Eurovision stars, and win Eurovision swag.

Dare to Sing

We put out a mass call to European fans of the Eurovision Song Contest: Do you #DareToSing? We challenged them to record a group “carpool karaoke” video of up to 5 people singing their favorite Eurovision hit, and offered an all-expenses-paid VIP Eurovision trip to the fans who produced the best one — including plane tickets and five-star accommodations!

In no time, we were inundated with fantastic videos of fans belting out their favorite Eurovision songs in their cars, complete with costume changes, props, and even banging pots and pans as their “instruments”! We received 100 amazing entries from 23 countries, including the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden… even from faraway Australia!

Eurovision Week

The week of Eurovision saw thousands of people arrive in Tel Aviv from all over the world. The European delegations, journalists, and tourists traveled to Israel from all over the world to take part in all the Eurovision festivities and breathe in the Eurovision air!

Here is a sum-up of all the Eurovision week fun:

The Orange Carpet:

Eurovision week kicked off with the Orange Carpet (orange is the official brand color of MyHeritage). We offered each of the delegations a specialized cocktail with their image imprinted on the drink. It was a great way to “cheer” on the contestants.

Press Center:

Journalists from around the world had the opportunity to learn more about MyHeritage and the One Big Family project at the dedicated MyHeritage booth at the Press Center. There were touch screens where journalists could explore the family histories of all the legends who participated in the One Big Family project. Furthermore, they had the opportunity to discover their Eurovision Look-alike, build their family trees, and take Eurovision DNA kits. We also held live DNA and family history reveals of the 2019 contestants we partnered with as part of the One Big Family project.

Eurovision Village:

The MyHeritage booth at the Eurovision Village let Eurovision fans go wild with Eurovision fever! The thousands of visitors had the opportunity to make family history discoveries and then print out their family trees. Fans also had the opportunity to meet Eurovision legends Måns Zelmerlöw, Verka Serduchka, Conchita Wurst, and Eleni Foureira — and take selfies with them!

The Live Events:

Before the show began, there was a huge MyHeritage branded backdrop with a cut out of Netta. Viewers were able to take their pictures, tag themselves, and then see themselves on the huge screen in real-time. We also gave out special Eurovision bags as a lovely souvenir to remember their experience.

During each one of the live shows (Semifinals 1, 2, and the Final), three MyHeritage fun facts appeared on screen during the show for 7 seconds each. Did you catch them? Here were a few that caught the audience by surprise:

Fact #1: Did you know that around 30% of past #Eurovision winners have Scandinavian DNA?

Fact #2: Eleni Foureira’s MyHeritage DNA results show she’s 68.9% Greek and South Italian!

Fact #3: 1979 Eurovision winner Gali Atari and 1998 Eurovision winner Dana International both did MyHeritageDNA tests and discovered that they are related!
