About our family
I have gathered what I can on REFFELL families in the UK and their inlaws and on my mother's MICHIE ancestors, descendants and inlaws originating in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. My earliest proven REFFELL ancestor is Joseph 1789-1848 born in Dorking, Surrey who went on to Horton, Buckinghamshire (now Berkshire) to form the Bucks REFFELL families. My earliest proven MICHIE ancestor is James 1761-1851 whose wife Margaret LESLIE's eariest ancestor is Alexander born about 1747. I believe my REFFELL family to originate from the Jewish family REFAEL which is Hebrew for God heals. Unlike most of my family I do not believe the family is French Huguenot as there are no Huguenot records of them nor REFFELL families in France whereas there are Catholic REFFELL families in Germany in 18th century as well as protestant families and even more REFFEL families there.
Missing pieces
I am unable to find any mention of my granduncle Leon Augustus REFFELL after 1881 census. According to his niece Mary A V he did not marry and was killed on board a ship during "the war" (presumably WW2). She said he was a policeman but there is no evidence of that. Leon Augustus never emigrated to my knowledge. In the 1871 census he is recorded under REFFETT and in the 1881 census under RIFFELLE. He was born in Hayes, Uxbridge, Middlesex in 1869 to Edwin REFFELL and Fanny nee FRAMPTON with siblings Horace Edwin Joseph, my grandfather Herbert Williiam and Silas Albert Frampton REFFELL.
