new GEDCOM file

I am building my family tree and I had info of the ancestors and I did not have the link to my family, therefore I started a “new tree” and now I have the link and I want to combine these two trees. Is there a way to add an exited program (tree) to another one without adding it one by one? In other words, merge two GEDCOM files with each other.

Cornelia,  you can find detailed, step-by-step instructions for doing this in the FAQ here.

Iimporting GEDCOM files is also described in the FTB User Guide on from p. 140 on.  To find the Guide, open FTB, click Help in the top menu, then click Users Guide.

The merge is only partial, according to the Guide:

"The ability to merge a GEDCOM file into a current project is done only partially. Currently the merge will not be done in full. There is still no application to compare, side by side, your existing family tree and the one in the imported GEDCOM, where you are asked to pick which specific records you wish to import and which ones to reject. This application is planned for a future release. " (p. 148)

As I recall from the last time I imported someone else's GEDCOM (using V6.x), you will wind up with duplicate individuals after the merge, and/or duplicate data for some individuals.  You can use Tools > Check for Duplicates to handle the first issue.  For the second, just delete or edit the duplicate data whenever you see it in a record.  It's a bit of a pain but that's the way it is for now until the MH team gets it fixed.

If that's no longer accurate, perhaps a MH staffer will jump in with correct or up-dated information.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for your help. I have tried the link you provided and on the next page I can see “How do I merge two family trees?”, but this page does not open. Cornelia.

Perhaps this will work.  Copy the URL and paste it into the proper field in your browser:
