What is the easiest way to create one surname trees from an existing all-inclusive family tree? I want the tree to contain everyone with the same surname and forenames and surname of spouses but not children of daughters. I have Family Tree Builder and PAF.

Dear Edwin,

Thank you for writing and we appreciate your patience!

It is not very clear for me what you are planning to do, however I do understand that you want to have the same surename for a big amount of individuals in your tree. You can use the function "Find and Replace" in the Family Tree Builder and perhaps in the "Find" specify empty surename. And in the replace just put in the surename.

The tools is located at Edit > Find and Replace.

Please, let me know if it works out, or describe the problem with examples and make it a little bit more clear for me as I got confused whether or not you want all your tree to contain the same surename or specify some people out of the surename.

Dear Dan,

Thank you for your answer and your help. What I plan to do is make out of the family tree that I have with all people related to people wth my surname and their inlaws separate trees . In the case of the REFFELL people I shall break the tree down into separate trees for people I have not been able to find direct relation to my ancestor Joseph REFFELL 1789-1848 and a separate tree for him and for each of his siblings. One example of REFFELL families to whom I have not been able to find direct relation to is the tree for James REFFELL 1763 on MyHeritage. I nave also made and published a tree for Joseph 1789-1848 which includes those I assume to be his ancestors though recorded under different surnames. To make it easier for family searchers to connect the people from the separate trees I shall include siblings of the main person which I did not do in the tree of James or of Joseph made so far.  In the case of each tree I intend to make in the future there will be people with the same surname plus names and surnames of spouses but not the names of children of daughters who will have their spouses' surnames. I shall do separate trees in the same way for my mother's side of the family. All this will take time and before that I am updating my all-surnames-inclusive tree and making it neat and tidy. I have used PAF to make my trees and gedcoms from them for importing. So far I have not done much with Family Tree Builder. I came across MyHeritage googling and was surprised to find that I had started downloading Family Tree Builder. When I imported the gedcom I had from PAF of all my various families and their relations I learned that I ought to have put deceased in the death field where I did not have a death date so now I have done that as well as using one variant only of each surname and putting the others in the Also Known As field. So for example I have changed LILLY to LILLIE when it is for the LILLIE family who have often been recorded as LILLY.

Kind regards,

Edwin
