I'm 62 and have great difficulty navigating web sites. I have couple of questions about the myheritige family tree and what is called "gedcom". Is there some way I could talk to someone in person to ask my questions?
Hi Dori, In Ancestry.com in the family tree you are the owner of you can download a Gedcom of your tree by opening the family tree in the Family Trees link on the home page. Next to the tree name you will find where it says "tree pages" and you need to click the "tree settings" link. It should open to the "tree info." tab/link and there you will find under "Manage your tree" and "Export tree link." I have Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers set to download to my desktop in Windows 7 and IE might be easiest here if your downloads aren't automatic to a file such as the desktop.
In Windows 7 and Internet Explore the trees export box should give you a choice of naming and saving your file in a link or button titled something like "Save as." In the box that opens give your tree the same name as it is on Ancestry if it doesn't list it automatically in the boxes or something easy to remember and direct it to your desktop. In Windows 7 you will see your computer files including the desktop on the left the page and click it then click the Save button.
Luckily I still have XP on another computer! In XP with Internet Explorer you should see Export or Download your tree as well. Click the download button and a File download box appears, Click "Save." The "Save as" box opens and on the left side you will see the desktop listed, click it, and name your tree if it doesn't already appear in the screen file name then click the Save button in that box.
You should be able to open this file using another program such as Family Tree Builder, etc. or upload it directly to MyHeritage though their website is geared to Family Tree Builder and you may not have all the features in using your tree with another program. I don't currently use Family Tree Builder so I can't help with that program. Be sure to save your downloads to use as backups should problems arise in their uploads to MyHeritage or in Ancestry.com!! I hope this helps? I'd be glad to help to further if I can! Best wishes, Dawn
Daniel, I underdtand about not talking to someone personlally, but your written ans. may help me. I have most of my tree information in ancestry.com. I want to get it all in My Heritage. I understand I must use Gedcom, but do not know where to begin. I need my information in My Heritage to work on my family tree. Thanks. Aubrey Ted Parrish
Ted, I will try with partial answer. I dont use that online service you do, so I will just give you a general answer. All 'family tree' programs I tried, support exporting and importing into/from GEDCOM format.
So, techically what you should do is, go through menus of your service (probably under 'File') and look for 'Export'.
If there is 'export' click on it. Then you should have different options how (into which format) you can export to. You need to choose GETCOM. Then you choose where on you computer you save it and under what name. Leave all setings as default usually that's all you need. Just click on OK.
After this is done you start this free program. My tree builder or whatever it's name is (I'm new, first time here) and go to 'File' and click on Import and browse to that location on your computer where you saved exported file.
If you can't find export button in your online service, you may need to call them and ask them how to get to it. Hope this helps...
