Dear Mr. Walker,

The Smart Matches™ are generated when you make a change in your family tree and publish this to your website  The data will then be compared with approximately 24 million other family trees at  MyHeritage.

There are several possible reasons why smart matches disappear.

One of them is that the family tree has been deleted. As a result all the smart matches related to this tree will be deleted as well. Another reason can be that the webmaster of the match changed the persons cards or deleted his entire tree. The results are that all related smart matches, including the smart matches already confirmed and rejected will disappear. Another reason could be is that you or the webmaster with whom you had smart matches stopped the smart match function and this has the same effect as mentioned above; all smart matches for that tree disappear. I recommend you to publish your tree on a regular basis so that the smart matches can be adjusted. Due to the size of your tree this may take several days. Best regards, Lihi MyHeritage team

Smart matches are false advertising.  They should be labelled STUPID MATCHES instead.  I really think they match on one single letter in both the first and last names.  For that reason alone, I turned those silly things off. My life has definately been less complicated since I did that.

Hi Stanley,

Thank you for writing to us.

Smart matches are created when you publish your family tree to your website.

When creating a family tree you will receive "ad hoc matches" .The reason you see the Smart Match indicator but when you go to check the matches there are none is due to a lag in processing Smart Matches.

When you type the information into your tree, we check to see if there are matches "ad-hoc" or "on the fly".

If there is a match, the green icon appears to indicate we've found a preliminary match.

The actual matches usually take a few days to be processed, so if you go to check your matches right away you won't see any, but ideally you should get matches within 6-7 days .

There are several possible reasons why smart matches disappear.

One possibility is that the family tree has been deleted. As a result all the smart matches

related to this tree will be deleted as well.

Another reason can be that the webmaster of the match changed the persons cards or deleted his entire tree.

The results are that all related smart matches, including the smart matches already confirmed

and rejected will disappear.

Another reason could be is that you or the webmaster with whom you had smart matches stopped

the smart match function and this has the same effect as mentioned above; all smart matches for that tree disappear.

well in that the people on here that are SUPPOSED to resolve problems have FAILED TO DO SO i found a why to speed up REJECTIONS when you get 45 plus SMART matches on the SAME two people that DONT match!

under smart matches top right of the page it has "by tree or by PEOPLE" click peopld then all those are on one "REJECT ALL

It is possible to get false positives in Smart Matching. Especially when names are popular and in cases like Scandinavian name formats where the same names are repeated in different combinations.

We are working on improving the Smart Matching system from the foundations up. We apologize for the inconvenience.

How long do we have to read these words about "improving Smart Matching"?  Will someone please pass me the barf bag? I'm getting sick just reading these words ... for about the 10-millionth time now.

If the company TRULY was interested in improving Stupid Matches, it would have lit a fire under the "development department" to GET IT WORKING CORRECTLY.  Or fired the current "developers" and hired people who actually could produce a better system.

Instead, all we get is the same boilerplate response of "Thank you for your suggestion, I will pass it onto the correct department for their consideration"?  What EXACTLY do these departments consider?  I haven't seen any improvement in 2 years.  The list of items to improve/fix must be about 6 times the circumferance of the Earth by now.

Update lag cannot be the reason! I have about 50 false matches that are at least one month old.

What algorithm is used for smart matching when the found matching persons in many cases have completely different names and are born about 100 years apart having different parents?? The matching system is useless! If it at least had been possible to make some personal settings so that only matches where the day of birth was within some selected interval, it would have been an improvement. I have stopped checking the matches, since it is waste of time stepping through all these false matches without finding a real match.

It is a pity that the mathing system is so bad. It had been a very nice feature, if it had worked properly.

Hej Jan,

Esther / MyHeritage Team

Hi,

I have looked at these matches and we are aware of the fact that the system is not flawless.
As a result of these corrupted pools (as we call them) a new mechanism for calculating Smart Matches is already in our developer's hands and on the road map as part of the Smart Match improvements.
This new mechanism will reduce the number of false positive matches dramatically.  It's much more robust than our current system. I'm not making any promises about time frames  for release of this new system - there is still a lot to understand about the scope of  the project before we can define and promise a time - but I thought you would be  interested to know it's in the works.

Thank you for the update,

Esther / MyHeritage Team
