We uploaded a file to establish our family tree online at MyHeritage. How do I update this tree? I keep my master file on my computuer; updates are made to this file. Now that we've found more information we'd like to update the information in our online family tree? How do we do this?
Note: I see articles about how to edit information for a person. But this would require updating information for each person one at a time. I'm hoping there's a way that I can update my file by uploading a new gedcom file. If I do this, what will happen to smart matches between our file and others that have been previously identified? I have the same problem. I want to update or combine my tree with others who pass me GEDCOM files, but if I download the gedcom, manipulate it, then re-upload it, all my matches are gone, and more important to me (since the matches seem to come back eventually) all of my photo associations are gone. I have to go back through all of my photo albums and re-associate all of the faces with all of the people.
How can we make this a seamless process so that these relationships can be preserved??
Sorry about the link, my mistake for putting it in, every time you work on a new Gedcom file and save it, even with the same name, it is serialised and the MyHeritage site sees it as a brand new tree and all matching regarding Smart Matches and Photos starts from scratch, the only way to avoid this is to edit the "one" tree and re publish it.
I work with other Family Tree Programs and they All recognise it is no longer the same tree and start everything from Scratch.
With computers, it is not easy to fool them and this is something that won't change in the near future.
I have to maintain two trees on two programs, if the trees become out of sync and I want to use the one with the most names in it on the other program, when I export and then re import the Gedcom in the other program it sees it as a new tree, no matter which way I export and import the trees.
This does not help with a solution, but confirms that it s a problem we all sit with.
That is why you can not edit an online tree published from Family Tree Builder, otherwise when you re publish, it would overwrite any changes made on line. Also if you exported from on line and then imported to Family Tree Builder it would over write the changes you made on Family Tree Builder.
I have tried merging the trees as well but it duplicated nearly all the existing names. Of course I had backed up before trying it so did not lose anything. Just restored the backup.
I know I haven't helped but have confirmed it can not be done.
Thanks for the reply. I'm less concerned with the smart matches, etc, since those will regenerate as the servers go through and do their thing. The biggest frustration I have is that if I import a GEDCOM and it has multimedia links, those don't get preservered. I can see that myheritage wouldn't necessarily want to have links all over the place in trees on their sites, but if the links are to myheritage media files (pictures, documents, etc) it would be nice if they would preserve them. Then the process would work... I could export the gedcom from my online site, add to it, and reimport it, without having to deal with reconnecting all the pictures.
It does make sense that there has to be one 'master copy', whether that be in FTB software or online.... just because dealing with conflicts is complicated.
Do you know if the Familty Tree Builder software does any better job at merging two GEDCOM files? Maybe I need to move to the software being my 'master copy', although it would be a shame to loose the ability to work on it together with other members of my family....

Hmm.. ok. Maybe I'll give it a try. I used a program called Branches (www.branchesgenealogy.com) that can prune down trees and export them to gedcom's. maybe I'll try trimming out the duplicate parts of the tree and just try importing the part of the tree that isn't already in my existing tree.
