I have duplicate places in my tree; some of which are nearly identical and some of which aren't. For example, I have Grafton NSW and Grafton, NSW, Australia in my tree. Might I suggest a tool that goes through the places and searchs for duplicated, or similar, place names?
Don't know about web based trees, but if you are using Family Tree Builder, go to Tools, then Tree Consistency Checker, and look for Inconsistent Place Name Spelling. This will find a lot of the problem entries.
Instead of the trouble of uploading and downloading versions back and forth why not make an online tool similar to "Smart matches" but instead of people you can choose to match your places with your own places or others. Sometimes it might be easier to actually match someones villages than finding them on a map! Also a way to easily change or add words like county or country and then all your entries with that specific place will be changed. example: Yorkton, Canada will become Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada or Fromheden, AC will become Fromheden 5, Norsjö, AC
If possible, might I suggest another idea for the product. Currently the program takes up a considerable amount of space on a computer. I suggest making it more streamlined, so it doesn't take up so much space and can run faster. Along those lines, I went through my photo's folder on my computer and I've found 3-4 copies of the same photo. Why are so many different copies needed?
