Smart matches confirmations not copied with backups
April Brown
- Close

I don't understand why when a user backups his or her family tree, it makes a new copy on the website and then all the smart matches come to be confirmed again.    Why can't the confirms follow with the backups.   I am so tired of confirming smart matches over again and again for the same family trees.   I also don't understand why a new backup shows up as a new family tree on the website, why can't it just update the current tree.

These two items will probably be deal breakers for me and I will probably not renew my membership again less this is fixed.

Hi April,

The problem you describe is very frustrating, and results from misuse of myheritage.com.

We provide a back up service so there is no need for any user to back up his tree on the family site. If you build your tree in FTB, the program automatically backs up the project every once in a while on the computer, without publishing it of course.

Nevertheless, some user publish back-ups, either accidentally or on purpose, because they don't understand the noise  they are introducing to the Smart Matching system.

Our challenge is to overcome this noise - I will report your complaint to our Development Team and ask them to find the solution.

I will update you when improvements in this area are made. In the mean while you can choose to ignore a complete tree if you feel it is a duplicate of a tree you are already matched with.

Regards,

Noam \ MyHeritage Team

I know that when I downloaded the family heritage software to my computer it creates a duplicate file on my website.   Every time I updated my computer file, it creates a file on the website.   I don't like the duplicate file, so I delete it.  But I don't why it does that and if you could fix that it would certainly helped.   I just quit using the copy on my computer as it is just a pain.    I don't think anyone wants to make backups, it just happens when you update your file on your computer.

I spend more time trying to confirm matches then doing my own research.

Hi April,

The normal behaviour of Family Tree Builder is to publish each update OVER the old update on the site.

If this is not what happened in your site, one of the following is possible:

1. I see you have a web tree in your site. If you exported a gedcom to FTB and then published, it will create another tree in your site. The way to overcome this, is to go to FTB, and use the File > Restore porject > restore from site menu. You will then be asked if you want to change you previous online web tree to an FTB tree, and you can choose "yes". Keep in mind that if you turn you online tree to an FTB tree, it will become read only online.

2. In FTB, if you use the "Save As" menu instead of "Save", it will create a copy of your project, and then publish a new copy to your site instead of updating.

All these complicated issues will be much improved once we release FTB 7.0 with the full Sync feature.

Noam  \ MyHeritage Team

Hi Naom,

I've only just recently become aware of this duplication problem.  I've been cursing under my breath other sites that appear over and over with the same matches, only to find that I may be one of those myself.

Why, is there even a "Publish" option on each site if it only creates an additional, though updated, site without removing the old site automatically?  How do I determine if I have multiple sites and how do I remove all but the latest version? I would not like to think that  I'm causing others the same problems that I've been upset about myself!  Thanks!

Hi Charles,

My name is Noam, not Naom.

That being said, I looked at your account, and I see that you have only one Family Site, called Herndon Family Tree Web Site.

In this Family Site, you have 2 trees, published from FTB. These seem like different trees, and not two copies of the same tree:  Herndon Family Tree, and Thiele Family tree.

So It would appear that your use of Family Tree Builder is correct, and each time you publish a new version of the tree it replaces the old version on the site.

Regards,

Noam.

Hi Noam,

Sorry about my error on your name, and thanks for checking it out for me.  I was worried that I was causing others problems after reading several streams that said I might be doing so.  Thanks for giving me peace of mind.

While I have your attention, could you please help me with my other problem?  I've requested help several times, both in these forums and on a ticket, but no good response has been given.

My site tells me I have 2 smart matches to confirm.  When I pull them up it shows one site (Reynolds/Hurt/Sweitzer Web Site) with 16 smart matches needing confirmation, but the site is blank.  It's been this way for about four months now, and it's very irritating to have to continually skip over this site in order to confirm other smart matches, which have no problem posting to my site.  Thanks in advance for your help.

Try changing the smart match setting to name instead of tree. That might help you, it might not. I have had both results.

Well, I tried it, but it did not give me the option of confirming or rejecting.  So, I went back and reversed one of the rejected entities and then just hit ignore site on the one that's been hung up for so long and it disappeared...problem solved "sort of".  It's a shame to have to ignore that site because seven smart matches showed up...four were good matches and three were rejects.  Now, even if we have mutual relatives, I'll never know about it, nor will the other site.  Pretty sad, since I'm pretty sure an MH rep could have fixed the problem without this drastic move.

Hi Charles,

This specific tree has caused the same kind of trouble before. Hearing your complaint makes me think there might be something wrong in our handling of this specific tree, and I will notify the relevant Developer.

As soon as a fix is made, I will let you know and you will be able to re-accept this tree, and see matches with it again.

Regards,

Noam.
