How to merge trees?

Hi guys, Just wondering if there is any way to merge two matched family trees?  Seems like there are no options in Smart Matches UI for this :(

Indeed it's kinda stupid to have Smart Match but no merge. It's not just the fact that it's annoying for the users - the MyHeritage database is filling up with dupes that has got different descriptions. Any logic in that?

Hi,

Unfortunately, in the current version of Family Tree Builder, and also on the website right now you can only look at smart match suggestions, and compare your tree with other trees that were suggested to you.

There is also an option to contact the administrator of the other tree.

In future versions, there will be an option to merge details of profiles on the trees with other trees.

 Thanks!

Since purchasing the premium plus package, my site has been useless.  I cannot merge, I cannot use any of the funtions, and after writing repeatedly to support (which there is NONE), I feel others should know that you have not worked out the kinks in your new program.  Many of us have found that we can no longer use many functions as the buttons have been grayed out.  I have wrote daily to get answers, and they do not answer!   For others that are contemplating buying the better package, don't do it!  There is NO help, no support and no one will response.  I am now paying premium price to do nothing except check my account daily to find out it's still not working!

The program worked for a short time and the concept is wonderful, but it will crash out!  I've already lost a week's time in waiting for a response, and yet no one is back there.  Until they get a support line or address that actually writes back, don't buy this product.  On the other hand if they ever resolve it,I will post it, but so far NO ONE IS AT HOME!  If you run into problems and technical issues, you are on your own.  I'm hoping someone will give me a way to connect to real people to get this resolved!  In fact, I'm looking to see what group (like better business bureau) that I can report this to, others should know these things BEFORE they purchase.

Again, DON"T BUY THE PREMIUM PLUS,  until you know that someone is back there to help solve the problems that they have created with their NEW revised version!  If anyone knows how I can get this taken care of, please let me know, my research is now on a full STOP!

Wow, this site REALLY needs that functionality.  It is really cool that smart matches happen, but it would be better if you could merge data without the rather tedious task of writing down the info from another tree and re-entering it in to your tree.

Please add this, I would pay for this extra feature.

Agreed. This is absolutely necessary feature. I have now browght few relatives to the site, each uploaded own gedcom file and we have several duplicated trees with photos. What should we do next? Only linking trees can salvage this problem!

Hi Max,

I think the best solution for you is to use the Merge GEDCOM option in Family Tree Builder.

you can read more about that here

Esther,

While you're thinking of improvements, how about the possibility of just adding a link from one person to the same person in another tree?  I really don't need to add 6000 very distant relatives, but it would be nice to know their relatives.

Thanks,

Dave

Thanks Noam, that's the way to go! My relatives and I will then wait until the feature is implemented. We have several trees built by each of us with common branches and will love to link them together.

In simplest version, there should be an option to link two identical persons in different trees on the same site or on different sites. Links probably should be in one direction, like web links - user one could link a person to identical person on other site, but other site might decide to link or not link backwards.

Ideally, it would be nice to comment the links - at the moment of creation or later.

For example - the commenter may estimate the probability that the identity is real. For distant relatives this may be just a guess based on name, relatives, dates, places etc.

Importantly the link should be clearly visible on the tree.

 =========

One more  note. In most cases it would be linking on of one person but of a branch of size of about 20 persons. All together I would need to link about 70-120 persons. Think about making this process optimally fast... Linking one by one 120 times is not that bad, just minimize number of clicks needed to establish each link.

Did you notice my other request for bug fix - feature request? The default photo for a person changes unpredictably when multiple photos are uploaded and labeled. There is no option for selecting default photo for a person among already uploaded, only to upload a new one.

That needs to be fixed.

It is now a convention on the web - for each uploaded photo at any later time to have a command - select this photo as user's profile photo - and prompting for custom trimming/cropping.

Hi Max,

You can change the personal photo of a person using the Tag People page.

find the relevant person in the right-hand table,

and click on 'change personal photo'.

Agreed, I would love to see an option to LINK to another tree rather than have to include all that information into your own.

Great idea!  Let's see it happen!

HI Esther,

Is there any other way to combine two trees? I'm new to this. When I started building my family tree I got some smart matches and found my ex's cousin has his whole family (600 people) on her tree in my heritage. I'm a member of her site so can access it. Is there a way to download it as a gedcom and then upload it to mine? Or download both as gedcoms and merge then reupload to my heritage? Or.... any other way to avoid hand copying all 600 entries?????

THanks!!!

Hi Rinaldo,

Thanks for writing to us.

It is possible to merge two family tree projects in Family Tree Builder.

In order to merge trees one of them will have to be exported to GEDCOM file format.

You can read about how to merge two trees on Family Tree Builder here.

Hi Lior and the MyHeritage team,

Merging two trees doesn't actually seem to merge anything - it just makes a list of duplicates. Also, Smart Matches don't match my two (slightly different) trees - eg. "Seawright Family Tree" and "Seawright Family Tree 13 Dec 2012".

How do I go about comparing the two trees to see where they are different, so they can be matched correctly? Manually viewing both entire family trees is not possible, because I don't recall where the changes were made.

Will someone please look at fixing the Merge option, and maybe having it as an option on the website, so it really does merge identical people rather than just making a huge list of duplicate people? The Merge function is rather useless as it doesn't actually seem to do anything.

Thanks,

Caroline...

Hi Caroline,

thank you for writing to us.

Unfortunately, the merging of trees does not automatically merge duplicates. You can use the attach feature in Family Tree Builder, or the Connect feature on the site to remedy this.

There is no smart matching available for your own trees under the same account, even if they are on separate sites.

Thank you for the improvement suggestions regarding the merge feature. I will pass them on.

Thanks, Esther... but the Connect feature doesn't seem to allow people from other Trees to be connected to that same person. It is only giving the option of parents, siblings, partners, etc.

What is taking so long to make this a viable feature? Four years is a bit long...

The whole system is unwieldy and doesn't seem to have simple options like transferring other people's details (eg. occupation, parents, siblings, children, etc, who are not 'private') across to your tree, even if both parties have said they are the same person and you have access to the other tree.

Is there any sign of a better user experience (seeing as we users are paying money for this!) in the near future?

Copy-and-pasting for hours of the day isn't what users should be doing - they should be focusing on finding out their history with the others with whom they have connected! Not trying to remember if Fred's wife was spelled Ann or Anne, and trying to remember her date of birth to add it a blank Partner and hope the Smart Match a tally triggers (which it occasionally fails to do, yet it can trigger for completely unrelated people)..... Etc.

Hi Caroline,

The best thing to do if you want to merge two trees is to export branches from one of the trees, merge them into the other tree and THEN use the attach feature. This procedure is available in Family Tree Builder and is pretty straightforward.

Here's an FAQ with step by step instructions how to extract branches: http://www.myheritage.com/help/2008/10/how-do-i-export-specific-branches-of-my-family-tree-in-family-tree-builder/

About the options to connect or attach two people in the tree, I wasn't sure I understood. You say that it doesn't give you the option to connect, it only allows you to connect parents, siblings, partners, children, etc.... What other relationship is there that you need? I can't think of another relation type that will occur in the family tree. Maybe I'm missing something here...

Transferring details from another person's tree happens with Smart Match automatic merge. When you get a Smart Match you can automatically merge those details into your tree or do a manual merge and select specific information to add to your tree.

We appreciate your feedback.

Hi Rhianna,

it is related to the topic of this thread - I want to connect, say Fred Smith, to Fred Smith from another tree as he is the same person. I also want Fred Smith's occupation, direct non-private family members, etc, to be copied across, too.

Also, the Family Tree Build program runs into the inability to copy even birth data of an individual from the site to the tree. Using the program is much more limited than the online site! How do you make a tree made on this program usable on the website?

Can you please explain how to automatically merge Smart Matches on the site, please? I have not seen that option offered on the site.

Is there an instruction manual for this site, as it seems impossible to figure out without one!

 Cheers,

Caroline...

Due to the fact that merging two family trees doesn't merge duplicate individuals what you want to do in the case that you have two Fred Smiths is to first decide which of the entries you're going to keep.

Then manually copy details from the other entry and delete it. After that, use the Attach feature to attach the remaining Fred Smith to his family.

In regard to copying birth data of an individual from the site to the tree, I assume you want to be able to edit the tree online and then get the changes updated into your copy of the tree in Family Tree Builder. This is not yet available, although the next version of the program will allow you to do that.

As for merging Smart Matches online, I just updated this FAQ: http://www.myheritage.com/help/2009/02/can-i-merge-my-smart-matching-results-from-another-site/  for you. It now shows how to merge matches in Family Tree Builder as well as how to merge if you edit your tree online.

I hope this information helps you.

Hi Rhianna,

Thanks for the response.

So, as far as I am inferring from what I am reading, what I want to do is only manual, not automatic.

Now, how do I automatically copy details like occupation, direct family members, burial, facts, etc, from two or more SmartMatches online? The page only shows what I already know: how to copy name, birth, death and photos.

The important details are not listed, and family members vanish on the copy screen. This is very frustrating and time consuming!

thanks,

Caroline...

Dear Caroline,

Thank you for contacting us.

Please see below.

Can I merge my Smart Matching results from another site?

MyHeritage’s Smart Matching technology constantly compares new family trees to the database of more than 800 million profiles on MyHeritage.com, to find matches and discover long lost family connections.

Now, members can work together to easily merge the information in their overlapping trees through the Smart Match Merge feature.

Family Tree Builder users:

To merge your Smart Matching results, open Family Tree Builder and open your Smart Matches. Select an individual to see his list of matches and choose a match to open the Compare window.

Click on Merge on the left side of the screen.

Put

This will open the Smart Match Merge utility, in which you will be able to select the people you want to merge and if you want an Automatic or Step-by-step merge.

Click

An Automatic Merge will merge all of the match’s details automatically. A step-by-step Merge will open the Merge Person Overview, for selecting exactly which details you want to merge with an automatic or step-by-step merge of details.

Click

Online trees (non-Family Tree Builder users):

Under the “Family tree” tab, select “Smart Matches”.

Smart

Select an individual and click “Review match” for the match you’d like to merge.

Click

Click on the “Copy and edit details” button. Remember, if you use Family Tree Builder you won’t have this button on your family site. Merging and other editing of the tree must be done within the software.

Copy

Use the little blue arrows to copy specific portions of the information in the matching tree or click “Copy all” to copy everything in one go. Click “Save changes” to finish.

Click

Please note that the Smart Match Merge feature is an added feature in Family Tree Builder and online family trees that is only available for Premium users that have upgraded a family site or purchased Family Tree Builder Premium.

Hope this helps.

Lihi
