How to delete an Unknown Name
Viola Jenerette
- Close
Figured out how to delete a person, however it changes it to an Unknown Name that I can not delete.  I even tried deleting the people that are part of the line and the children but still will not delete.  Everything is showing up as Unknown for the people that I deleted.  Very frustrating.

Thanks for any help!

Hi,

Thanks for writing. I am sorry you are having trouble.

The reason the grey "unknown" shows up when you try to delete someone has to do with the way family trees are built and how the family tree program at MyHeritage works.

In standard family tree logic there must always be a man-woman pair whenever a child exists in the tree.

In order to comply with those standards, the family tree program at MyHeritage also requires a man-woman pair in order for a child to exist in the tree.

This means that anytime there is a child attached to two persons in the tree, and you try to delete one of those parents, the program is forced to keep a "person" in that place. Thus, our lovely unknown.

We are currently working on a better solution to this problem.

In the meantime, your best workaround is to make sure that there are no children attached to a person that you would like to delete.

I understand if this is frustrating for you because, for example, there may be persons "high up" in the tree that you need to delete and it would mean deleting a lot of children in order to get to him/her. The best thing to do is EDIT the information on that person if you can rather than trying to delete him/her altogether.

If you have further questions, please let me know.

 Best Regards,

 Esther / MyHeritage team

Thanks Esther!  I did delete the children but they remain as unknown as do their parents.  For some reason the program messed up when I was inputting - looked like the data did not take - so I did it again.  Now there are double brothers & sisters of my father - do I have to delete his parents and grandparents etc. for this to take? What a mess.

Thanks so much for your response!

Hi ,

I am sorry that you're still having difficulty.

Could you please tell me with which language you created your tree? It is possible the problem is related to languages in Family Tree Builder.

Esther - thank you for your response.  I created it in English and everything else looks fine...just these unknown boxes which I need to delete and redo.  The children have been deleted - even though they show up as unknowns also.
