Hi there, my wife and I love FTB. It looks great, works very intuitively, and is super cool for doing geneology on. However, I'm becoming very frustrated because the application continuously crashes. Hard. I'm running Windows 7, 64-bit. My system features 8 GB of ram, gobs of HD space, and a quad-core processor . . . so I'm pretty sure it's not my system that's causing problems.
I haven't yet noticed any specific action in the program causing it to crash, but most recently I'd just done a very lengthy "step-by-step merge" process (something like 19 people). After I completed the merge, when I clicked on the SAVE icon, it crashed. UGH. SUPER irritating.
Is there a beta version or something which won't crash as much on me?
I have the exact same problem.... I just downloaded the free version of Family Tree Builder a few days ago and loved it so much that I got the premium version.
I entered info back to the 1600's on one side of my family and then the program started to act slowly and failed to respond because of lack of memory. My computer has just 1 GB of ram so I was going to get more memory in hopes of curing the problem.
But you say you have 8 GB of ram and have the problem... So I'm at a loss for now..
Yeah, I agree the program is brilliant for building family trees and connecting all the many genealogical dots--but the excessive crashing is EXCEEDINGLY annoying.
What's weird is that I have gotten the "out of memory" crash--but even then my system wasn't remotely taxed for memory. I checked the memory usage and it was still fairly low. So I'm not sure if the program reserves a certain amount of memory and then crashes if it uses that amount up?
Even stranger is that the program doesn't always crash with the same frequency. Sometimes it crashes just about every time I use the "match"/merge functionality, or put in new ancestor data. Other times it doesn't crash for quite a while even when doing the same things.
It seems to me that the bug might lie behind the scenes in how the application Family Tree Builder on our individual computers communicates with the myheritage.com/family tree network. For instance, perhaps the application doesn't handle very well the congestion at the myheritage.com network when many people are simultaneously using their applications and the "research" and "smart matches"/merging and "publishing" features.
I say that because whenever FTB crashes (stops responding/hangs/etc.) I check my system performance monitor and it indicates that my CPUs aren't being taxed, nor is my memory even remotely close to being all used up (normally I have at least 2 GB free when I check).
So crashes are just out of the blue: I'll be working along and all the sudden the program stops responding and the only way to resume work is to force the program to close and restart it.
As far as features are concerned, FTB is awesome; but it'd be wonderful if the company behind it could focus on making it rock solid stable now.
Here's what happens to me....when I first load the program I leave it running and go to the task manager on my computer and set it to watch the ram usage.....at first it uses just about a 1/2 GIG. Then slowly but surely the usage creeps up (without any use) until it crashes due to excessive memory use.
I just came back from Best Buy and talked to a guy in the geek squad. He seemed to think it was a software problem causing something called a "memory leak". He also said it's possible something on my computer is causing it.
Regardless, I just bought an extra 2 GiGs of memory and will put that into my computer and see what happens on "task manager" after that.
The problem happening to you with 8 gigs doesn't look promising to me tho..
I just installed 5.0.0.1149 on my Windows 7 64bit machine and it's still having problems. I have a dual monitor setup and FTB5 does not handle that well at all. If you maximize the app and then restore previous size/position, the app crashes. Are you still looking for beta testers? I have experience with coding and testing Win32 apps with Windows 7.
I tried running with Vista compatibility enabled, no change in the behavior.
If I maximize the app, it goes to both monitors, which is not the proscribed behavior for a Win32 app. After minimizing, when I restore the position, the following things happen.
The original size and position are stored
The app does not repaint it's window correctly
A message dialog is displayed, with the message "The parameter is incorrect".
Pressing the "OK" button closes the dialog and a new one with the message is displayed. This will repeat forever.
Task Manager must be used to close the application
This was with "Vista SP2". With "Vista SP1" and "Vista", the behavior was nearly identical.
Dragging the application to the top of the screen produces the same behavior.
I installed the application to it's default folder. This was c:\myheritage, which is doesn't follow Microsoft's standard practices. It should have been installed to %ProgramFiles%\myheritage. Why does it install to that folder?
Just wondering if you ever got a solution for this? I have the 5.1 version and the same exact thing is happening to me when I try to do a split screen. I'm running Windows 7. I installed this version months ago when it came out, and haven't had a single problem with it until just this week and it started doing what you described in your previous post.
I love this program and afer reading a few memory leak issues in the forum, tried the lowering of concurrent requests to 1 in the SMART RESEARCH setting I seemed to have stopped the memory leak problem.
I am interested in the beta program, so sigm me up !
I saw your post on the board and would like to know how you lower the number of concurrent requests in the SMART RESEARCH setting. I, too, am having problems with memory leaks, stalling and crashing and don't know what's causing it. Hope you can help! Thanks....
Hi Noam,

I have successfully created GEDCOM files from my old Windows XP 32 bit "GSP Family Tree" and now have the files stored on a flash drive. So, Yes please, I would like you to register me for the Beta version for Windows 7 64 bit.
I'm using FTB 4.0.0.916. I started with Aldfear and I have about 260 persons. Now I want to chang to a better program so I tried "Brothers Keeper, Legacy, Oedipus Pro Gen, TMG, Haza and of course Family Tree Builder". FTB and Legacy where the better programs and FTB is the program I want. I installed it on my pc (8Gb, win7 64bit) But very often it chrashed suddenly. All my files who weren't saved are gone... I hope that the next build will solve my problem. So can I subscribe me as beta tester for the 5.0 build?
Hi is this problem fixed yet? I cant access my files today...no idea what beta testing is so cant help, but did notice that there is no windows 7 option in the innards, I a running version 5 I think as it was recently installed, 15 Feb2011.
Yes, thanks for your personal message today telling me to look for the stored files on my system, the problem was in how to open those files and work on them, and how your system recognises asterisks.
When I contacted you THREE weeks ago I could get nothing to work. Crash after crash after crash. I saved reloaded etc etc after 10 days not having heard from you I bought FTM and loaded my gedcom back ups to that. I had no problems. Everything worked like a dream. After a little while continuing on the new software I twigged what might have been the problem.
There are several Kings in the tree I am doing and so they would all be apparent I marked them with an asterisk in front of the name *Richard III , *Henry II *David I.. I had only done three when all hell broke out and I could not get back in. Wondering if this was the problem, I went back to FTB and opened it. It wouldnt allow me to access it as usual to delete the *. Because I am a masochist I decided to delete the * in FTM...reloaded the gedom to FTB and you would never know there had been a problem. Who would have thought *** could be such a problem.
My Win 7 64 bit system keeps crashing too. There were no problems until I installed the Premium version. There are lots of places on my screen where there used to be words, like the label below the Map and American Flag icons, and now it says "TODO". I did change the Smartsearch config file to off - mine was at 36, not 5 - and that did not help. I am going to try a reinstall, maybe that will help.
