Maybe I am missing the settings, but there are two things I would like to see differentiate Guests from Members...

1. Guests should not be able to see Addresses in the Genealogy

2. Members should be able to edit the Genealogy, add people, edit notes, etc...

Is this currently the case, or....?

1. Guests should not be able to see Addresses in the Genealogy

Check your privacy settings in the Admin section of your site. If they are set to "mixed" or "private", then only members will see addresses in the Genealogy section.

2. Members should be able to edit the Genealogy, add people, edit notes, etc...

You can always promote members to webmaster status to allow them to modify the site.

If you want them to be able to add info to the family tree, then have them do it in Family Tree Builder.  What you can do is send them the FTB tree you have already made, let them modify it and re-publish it. Anyone who is a webmaster on your site would be able to do this on his/her own.

I tried to change my setting to Mixed, but I unchecked Genealogy. I just wanted the Guest Book to be accessible to non-members.  When I did that it switched to Private all on its own.  I tried this about 4 times, with the same results.  I'll leave it Private; it's not that huge of an issue.  Just thought I'd pass on the info.

  1. Hmmm. It is set to Mixed, but it says under Guest Privileges: "Genealogy | All Pages | [check]Access". IE: It appears to tell me that Guests can either have access to ALL pages or to NONE. Am I misreading this?
  2. So if I have 3-4 different people each editing the tree in Family Tree Builder themselves at the same time... when they go to upload the tree, wont there be potential conflicts? Does the site make sure to synchronize FROM the site as well as TO the site?

Ignoring #2 for now since it is covered in another thread...

Is there any update on #1?  I would prefer to open up some information (say Names) to guests -- but am not about to do that until it is clear what is public and what is private. "All Pages" doesn't cut it.  If it is already implemented correctly, then it should just say that on the Privacy Settings screen.

Hmm... It appears that right now, if we give public access to the genealogy, they don't even see first names or pictures of those who are still alive (or that we forgot to checkmark deceased)...

See, what I am thinking is that I want to be able to help other genealogists look for the information, without putting those living at risk of privacy concerns... For example, first AND last name visible, ability to choose whether No Address, Full Address, County/State Only visible to guests, etc...
