it seems I have a problem that is not too uncommon - I received an eMail about several Smart Matches, but if I look at the SM page, it is empty .... I am lost and dont know what to do. Does anybody have an idea? BTW - my membership was transferred from Verwandt.de to MyHertigae ...
I just wanted to say that the Smart Matching feature is pretty awesome. It's a really helpful, cool feature, and it must have been a lot of work to develop. I saw that most of the comments in the forum were complaining about how long the matching takes or other details. It's human nature to be dissatisfied, but as an I.T guy, I know how much it sucks that no one says, "Thanks, that's awesome." Everything can always be better, but Smart Matching is showing me stuff about my ancestors I never would have learned, and it's doing it quickly, accurately, and basically free to me. Thanks, it's awesome. Keep up the good work.
My only comment: the Smart matching pages don't really mention that merging and removing smart matches is a premium feature. I didn't find that out until coming to the forum. Merging smart matches is a really attractive feature to me, and I may well end up joining for it. You should put a link about that on the Smart Match pages. :)

I started a tree and on a couple of occasions once I entered the person's name, a Smart Match indicator appeared on that name. I went to check on that data and then when I returned to my tree the Smart Match indicator was gone and I haven't been able to find them again. This happened more than once. I read on the site that Smart Matches can take up to 48 hours to be updated, but i've gotten nothing since the original indication.
I know a couple of people in my tree are on other tress and I'd really like to gather that information.
The reason you see the Smart Match indicator but when you go to check the matches is due to a lag in processing Smart Matches.
What happens is that when you type the information into your tree, we check to see if there are matches "ad-hoc" or "on the fly". If there is a match, the green icon appears to indicate we've found a preliminary match.
The actual matches usually take a few days to be processed, so if you go to check your matches right away you won't see any, but ideally you should get matches within 72 hours. (However, due to some improvements, currently there is a much longer wait time.)
Normally when you return to your tree you should still see the green icon indicating that you have a match - even if the actual match hasn't yet appeared on your matches page.
The reason you no longer see the green icon is because the code that runs the "ad-hoc" search doesn't yet know how to search names if they aren't being typed in. This means that when you come back to your tree the "ad-hoc" code runs on your tree looking for names like normal.
BUT It doesn't "see" the matches you typed previously because you aren't typing the name anymore. Due to this fact it doesn't "see" those matches and won't display the green icon.
This is a limitation that we're working to fix right now.
I hope this makes sense. Let me know if I can offer a better explanation.
Last Sunday, May 23, I added several people to my family tree online. 3 Smart Matches showed up and I sent a message to the host of one of them. I haven't heard back from that person, and the Smart Match symbol has not shown up again. Why not?
It's important to understand that Smart Matches are dynamic and can change at any time.
It's possible that the person on the other end of your match deleted his/her tree, changed the information in the tree so it no longer matches with your information, made the tree private and turned off Smart Matches, etc.
If you get a match with someone and would like to contact that person, please be patient when waiting for a response. You can always try to leave a comment on the Site Manager's profile as an extra step to get in contact with someone.
Though smart matching sounds great, it can be a pain in the ass. I now have 10 smart matches of which only one is fruitful. All others are just spam: names don´t match, times don´t match and so on. Now this would be something I could live with, if only those that are useless could be permanently deleted. But they constanly show up taking space, time and efforts away from the real search. I know the Israelis are fast people, shouldn´t they dig into this problem and make sure to get rid of nonsense.
Additionally I am missing the possibility to merge doubles. Today I am forced to upload a new gedcom after merging in my original PC genealogy programm thus losing all fotos. A nightmare.
Re:'282917' family tree - I recieved an email saying that there are 50 Smart Matches in my tree - when I follow the link it tells me -0- individual matches and -0- Tree matches...???
I don't know what else to do but follow the link in the email - Please advise.
I checked your account details and there was a glitch in sending your Smart Matches email. The matches will be available on your family site in a few days.
Jael - thank you so much for fixing the glitch - I'm thrilled with the matches, and anxious to make contact with "potential" relatives. - But I would like to "clean up my site" before doing that. --
Somehow I have Anderson Family Tree AND 282917, and they are both the same - how can I consolidate them?
I cannot figure out why some of the entries say "private" - I didn't request that knowlingly - can you tell me how to undo that ?
And lastly, tho I've read as much as I can about it, I still cannot figure out the Family Tree Builder vs on-line additions. - It seems like a redundancy to me - Is there any reason not to just work on-line instead of "publishing" and going back and forth??
Thank you, Robin Waters
I checked your account details and there was a glitch in sending your Smart Matches email. The matches will be available on your family site in a few days.
Can you send me a link to the family site where the 282917 tree appears? I wasn't able to find it in your account details.
If you see "private" in your own tree, it means you are not logged in as the site manager of your site.
Unless... are you referring to seeing private when you compare matches? If this is the case it means that on the other person's tree you don't have matches with the surrounding people. For example, when you look at a match, you will always see a few surrounding people in the other person's tree - correct? This is to give you a better idea if the match is real.
However, if the other tree has living people in the surrounding but your tree doesn't have matches with those people then we do not show you the full names in order to protect privacy. Hope this is clear.
There are different advantages to Family Tree Builder vs. online trees.
Family Tree Builder has more advanced functionality.
Also, FTB trees cannot be edited online. Many people prefer to post a "read only" version of their tree on their family site to protect the information.
The big advantage of online trees is that you do all the work online. It doesn't matter if you are on vacation or at work, you can always work on your tree. And collaboration with family members is possible as they can also log in and work on the tree whenever they wish.
Can you tell me how to merge these two so that I have just the one site? - My preference is to have just the one online - there is no reason for privacy/protection, it's fine for anyone to see everything.
Thanks for the link. I was able to find the site and tree you are referring to.
I recommend deleting one of the sites and accounts (you have two logins - must have signed up in the past with a different email address). We don't have a way to combine accounts or sites, so the best thing will be to choose one account to keep and delete the other.
Let me know if that is okay with you and which account to delete. I will take care of it for you.
If you deleted your family tree from Family Tree Builder, that's great. It will help to avoid confusion.
However, your two accounts still exist. They can only be deleted by someone on the support team.
The Anderson Family Tree Web Site has your published tree from Family Tree Builder on it. Family Tree Builder trees cannot be edited online so working online with this tree won't be an option for you.
Your second account has a tree which is editable online and the tree there looks exactly the same as the tree on your Anderson site.
I think you should use the second account and delete the first account. If that is okay with you I will take care of it for you and make sure your login remains the same.
