Yesterday Smart Matching stopped working in FamilyTree builder. It says there are smart matches, but when I click on them only my shows up. It says that there are for example 5 matches but I can´t see them. When I click un update the whole program crashes.
I believe this has to to with windows update. There was some updates installed just before the problem occured. I run windows 7.
There is no other applications insalled in the pc. It is for use with MyHeritage only.
thank you for the message. Please add myheritage.exe to your Windows' DEP as a trusted executable.
You can read how to do that in this web page:
http://windows.microsoft.com/nb-NO/windows7/Change-Data-Execution-Prevention-settings
If you still experience trouble, please let me know what you are doing before this happens.
PS. Please also download the newest version of FTB: http://www.myheritage.no/ftb (it will not destroy your current project).
Thank you for you answer, but unfortunately it did not help.
I am already running the latest version of the software, and DEP did not help.
Tuesday in this week Microsoft released new updates to the Windows 7 system. And when these were automaticly installed it stopped working. I am running an English version of Windows 7 Ultimate. With all the latest updates.
The virus protection I use is Microsoft Security Essentials
All day long today I've been getting the little green icon when I enter names. OK - another match...
When I click on the icon and go to the actual page - I am now told there are 0 matches. If I go back to the tree, now the green icon is gone. This has been happening today for appx 50% of the new names.
The reason you see the Smart Match indicator but when you go to check the matches there are none is due to a lag in processing Smart Matches.
What happens is that when you type the information into your tree, we check to see if there are matches "ad-hoc" or "on the fly". If there is a match, the green icon appears to indicate we've found a preliminary match.
The actual matches usually take a few days to be processed, so if you go to check your matches right away you won't see any, but ideally you should get matches within 72 hours. (However, due to some improvements, currently there is a much longer wait time.)
I have my site registered as "Private Site, open to members only". I have the SmartMatch option enabled. 3 questions:
1) what (if any) information on my family site is open and accessible to other members sharing a SmartMatch with my site?
2) is this dependent on whether or not I have confirmed the match, or does the very exictence of the match enable the owner of the "matching site" to access info on my site ?
3) is there any way I can limit the accessibility in such a case (except disabling SmartMatching completely) ?
Is it really possible for a "smart-matcher" to copy over ones entire tree with photographs and all to his own - without me knowing aboaut it or eaven ciónfirming the match? I had this experience and feel very uneasy about it. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again?
I'm aware of (and using) the option to prevent copying of photos.
But what is worrying me is all the rest of the site content. I hope someone from MyHeritage will explain to us if anybody having a SmartMatch with a person in my tree (perhaps even without my confirming the correctness of the match /?) can view (and thus also copy) all the contents of my family tree (OK, let's assume - without the photos) ?
If this really is the case then the whole option of having a site registered as "Private" seems pretty meaningless.
I'm not trying to be rude, but could you please explain to me the reason for all the privacy? Are you ashamed of the relatives in your family tree? I have never been able to grasp the reasoning behind not being proud of your family and being so secretive about your family tree. Could you explain it to me? Thanks. Charles Herndon.
Hi and thanks a lot Joel for joining this discussion - which I mean is very urgent and not only concerns your privacy rights - but also the reliability of MyHeritage.com as a serious ground for genealogical research. If it - as it turns out - is possible to copy the total - or considerable parts - of the content of another person's family tree (without his or her knowledge - leave out confirmation!!), the building of trees surely quickly grows out of controll and the smart-match-idea becomes totally useless - even a obstacle - for any geneologist with the least ambition to have controll of the data that underpin his or her research.
My experience is that regestering your sight as "Private" and not allowing copying of photos IS not only "pretty" but totally meaningless!!!
I surely hope someone responsible fron MyHeritage would give this matter a serious thought.

Hi Annette and Eric.
I'm aware of (and using) the option to prevent copying of photos.

Smart Matching works by comparing family trees. If you enabled SmartMatches for your tree, then even if the site is private, it will be included in the database, and, if SmartMatches are found between your tree and another tree, the system will notify both users. You will both be able to confirm or reject the match, compare trees and copy details and photos from each other (if you are Premium users) for that specific match. You can, as was mentioned in this discussion, disable the option for other users to copy photos from you.
If you mark your tree as private, the other user will not be able to compare trees with you because they cannot view your tree as a guest- they will see Private for all people in your tree. They will still be able to confirm the specific match and copy details from it.
I hope that this helps you understand, please let me know if you hae any more questions regarding this.

I understand what this means if your tree is private but what does it mean for the other settings? Can people copy your whole tree through 1 match? Could you pell it out for us MyHeritage please?
I did a thorough check of all your information on this before uploading my tree however from what I am reading above things are not what they seem
This is the way I think it works on a private tree:
Say you have a match for someone. You will get that person's information with all other people connected to them marked private. Should you also have a match with that person's son, the new match will give the son's info, but the parent who was the previous match will be marked private on the second match. So it is on down the line until potentially the entire tree has been copied one person at a time.
Now and then I get SmartMatches which are empty. I.e I have a list of 10 matches on a person or in a matching tree but only 9 shows up in list. If I go in and verifies a match and press next it will jump out to the list when I hit the "invisible" match. The same happens when I compare trees. If all visible matches are approved/rejected I will still have one match for the person/tree but nothing is showing in the list. I now have the same problem in the Waiting for aprovement page.
Well, obviously none of you (MH reps) are ever going to answer my question or give me any help, so I guess I'll just give up trying and begin looking around for another company to move my tree and research to. I've sent a contact form, back when it was still working, and put my problem on many of these forum streams, but to no avail. When someone else reports the same problem and gets a response, I get all excited and look at the answer thinking I can use the same advice to correct my problem, only to read that the MH rep has sent that person a private email, rather than answering the question in the forum, so as to help all of us! I give up!!!!!
Please share with all of us! I've had the same problem numerous times and have never gotten a good answer about why this keeps happening. I have a messaage on you family site that says "2 Smartmatches to confirm". I go in to review them and see "16 matches to confirm" on the Reynolds/Hunt/Sweitzer Web Site, but when I go to review them, it's blank. It's been that way for about four months now. The only reply I got from one of the site employees was that a large tree with so many names takes a longer amount of time to have these matches post to it. That's not true because newer smartmatches still appear daily and have no problem posting to my site. Plesae, may I get a truthful, intelligent answer, or at least will someone go in and correct this particular problem? It's getting to be very irritating to have to skip around this one site in order to confirm, or reject, my other smartmatches. Thanks, Charles.
Now using the web gui to sort smart matches as the FTB gui is unusable, I've managed to get these strange behaviors.
Image 1 (hits)The names are different, the years are different, still there seem to be a match, but when I open the compare trees function, I get image 2 (compared trees). Where it shows the same person. I can understand it being a match in the second case, but it's the same match, but in 2 different views.
