Hi, I thought I had posted this question before but can't seem to find it. Is there a way to hide birthdates? Birthdates need to be a part of the geological record but it has been brought to my attention by a relative that it may present a security risk in this climate of identity thefts. Also some female relatives object to their ages being displayed on the calender. This relative also has a tree using another program and he has the ability to enter the birthdate and hide it.
My son is not with the mother of his son but there is no allowance for not married in the first place . they were not married or divorced ? so how do i put in my grandson.
There are two possible ways for building your tree in this case.
1. If you want to only add your son’s son (your grandson), without even adding the son’s mother you can do the following. Go to your son in the family tree and click the big ( ) button at the bottom of his card. Select “Add son”. In the form that pops up, you select “No mother (single father)” in the Select mother field (the third field). This will add your son’s son without adding his mother. If you already added the mother, you can simply delete her by clicking the ( ) button at the bottom of her card and select “Delete this person” from the menu on the right.
2. The second option is to add the mother but state that your son and the mother were not married. To do that, you can click your son’s card. Then, on panel on the left side of the screen, you may see in the list of facts that there is a marriage fact for your son and the mother. Remove this fact by clicking the X button on its right. Now, you can add a separation event, if you wish, by clicking the Add link at the top of the Facts list. In the pop up window that opens, select “Separation” in the Type selection list. Click OK and a separation event will be added.
Hope this is helpful.
i am finding more of my husbands(Hodes) side than of my origional serch of my parents side (Walport) how can i change it so the hodes side comes up when opening as my profile says i am keeper of the (walport) side. or does it matter? can i be both?
...first of all I think there may be a problem with your forum software - the search functionality was frustrating.
Currently if I tag a photo with someone already in my tree the tree-entry and photo are linked nicely. However I would like to also see the reverse. My suggestion is this: There should be a way to link previously uploaded&tagged photos to new family tree entries.
Also if I uploaded a single photo (to seed the facial recognition) the site would ask if this new family tree entry is one of the other ppl already tagged in the other photos.
I am not sure I completely understand your question. Can you please clarify what you mean by: “there should be a way to link previously uploaded & tagged photos to new family tree entries”.
Do you mean that if you see a face in a photo and this person is not yet in the family tree, that there should be a way to add this “new” person from the photo into the family tree?
I also didn’t quite understand what you meant by: “the site would ask if this new family tree entry is one of the other ppl already tagged in the other photos.”
Again, did you mean that if you previously tagged a person in a photo, and that person was not yet added to the family tree, and then you are adding him/her to the family tree, there should be a way to say that this new person and the person that was previously tagged is in fact the same person?
Thank you for taking interest. I think you have the gist of what I'm trying to say. To clarify, let me describe my scenario:
A new user creates an accent on myheritage.com. They first muddle around a bit in the family tree section adding a few family members. Second, they go to the photos section and upload a few hundred family photos. They then tag all the photos with the help of the facial recognition functionality. During the tagging process even though all the family members get tagged, the family that were first added to the family-tree get linked to the tagged photosets; their family tree profiles are linked to the many photos.
Finally the user returns to the family tree section of the site to add the missing family members they have just spent time tagging. This is where the usability issues start: when adding a new node to the family tree, there is no way to link it to a tagged individual in the photos. Currently, it seems the only work-around is to:
Delete all your photos.
Complete your entire family tree
Then re-upload your photos an re-tag everything
Obviously this is not an ideal solution. Here's my suggestion:
When you add a new node to your tree create an additional section that displays thumbnails of the individuals in your photosets that closely match the provided first & last name. The user can then click on the thumbnail of the individual they are adding. You might also add a search box next to the thumbnails to (that would update the thumbnail list asynchronously) to reconcile people tagged with nicknames, or alternate names, etc...
This same thing could also happen during photo upload for the new family tree member. After upload the site could provide the list of thumbnails (via facial recognition), and in the same way, give the user a choice to a link the tree-node with a tagged individual.
I think I now understand what you’re saying, and there is a solution for that, although not perfect.
Here’s what’s happening. When you (or other people you invited) tag people in photos, and you start typing a name, the site lets you select people that are already in the family tree. If you don’t select someone in the tree (because this person was never added to the tree) the site will create a new entry for this person. However, the person is NOT added to the family tree. It’s just a name in a photo.
Then, when you do add this person to the correct place in the family tree, there will be, unfortunately, nothing that connects these two entities automatically. What you’ll have is a person in the family tree with NO photos AND a name, not in the family tree WITH photos. However, you do not need to delete all the photos and retag them. What you can do is the following. Say you just added “Roger Williams” to the family tree and you suspect that this name has already been tagged in photos. You go to the Photos & Videos tab and go to the Tag people page. There, go to the “Already tagged” tab (the second one) and look for “Roger Williams” (you can search for this name at the top left corner where it says “Find person” below the blue line). If you find this person, it means that the name was tagged in photos but the tagging was not connected to the person in the family tree. What you do is this: Select this person to see all the faces where he was tagged. Above the Save button, you will be able to type in a name. Erase the name “Roger Williams” and start typing it again! You will see that the site suggests TWO people named “Roger Williams”. So select the one that does not have a photo (this is the person in the family tree) and not the one with the photo (this is the name that was tagged but is not in the tree). Click Save. Now, all the photos that were once tagged as the name, will now be tagged as the person in the family tree. You will need to refresh the page in order to see the changes.
It’s a bit confusing, I know, and we are working to make it better in future versions of the software.
I am having exactly the same problem as Chris, but now (a year later) the software has been updated and I can't do what you suggested as the solution!
i.e. "What you do is this: Select this person to see all the faces where he was tagged. Above the Save button, you will be able to type in a name."
It seems like I have to go to each photo where an individual was tagged to correct this error. In my case I only have one to fix, but when I invite my family who are used to facebook, they will start uploading images and tagging without adding people to the tree...
I don't want to limit their ability to upload photos, and have to do it all myself. Is there some other fix for this?
We have released a new Tagger for user in every Family Site.
You can reach it through the Photos & Videos page > Tag People
On the right-hand side, if you choose to Display All individuals who were already tagged, you will have the option of Correcting a Tagging Mistake for a specific person,
and you will be able to do so for several photos at a time.
thanx for allowing us to upload videos. however id like to create a video (using photo to video converter from other sites) but i cannot retrieve/import the pictures uploaded by members of my family from MyHeritage Album/Photos...is there any way i can import those photos? again, thanx.
You can easily import photos from your family site to your computer by using the Download option. This button appears at the top of the page where you see a photo and at the top of the page where you see an album. When you are in the main Albums page of the site, this option is available from the “More actions” button by selecting the “Download all items” option.
The Download option creates a ZIP file containing all the photos in the album (or containing one photo if you’ve selecting only one photo). Your browser may give you a warning at the top of the browser screen which you will need to accept.
Perhaps Charles intended to have music playing in the background of his family site all the time. This is a feature we do not support yet. Charles, can you please clarify your intention?
YES! you can add music to your family site. We support most audio formats. Just upload it like any other photo or a video. The site will automatically play it on the page that displays this item. You can upload other documents as well such as Word files, PDF files and other popular document formats.
Hope this helps to share your music with your family
A family member died recently and I wanted to post obituaries of different persons on his profile (so that interested people can read them in one central place).
Right now I already have an option to write a obituary but only on my own profile page. I'm of the opinion that this should be improved. I don't think that most people are interested to read what that person wrote about a deceased but what everybody wrote about him.
And obituaries should play a big role on an genealogy site because it isn't really interesting when your great-great-great-grandfather was baptized but who he was.
UPDATE: I didn't want to create an extra post but I still wanted to say thank you for showing me two ways for adding obituaries and showing me that this feature hasn't been forgotten.
I agree with your observations that obituaries are something that our site should support more naturally and we are planning to do that in one of the next revisions of the site.
In the meantime, what I can suggest is one of two approaches.
1. Each person in the family tree has a page that represents this person with all the details about him/her. In this page, every site member can add a comment and everybody can see everybody else’s comments. This is one possibility for adding obituaries. The drawback to this approach is that these comments do not get added to the news section in the home page of the site, which is something we will fix shortly.
2. The other way to add these obituaries is to add them as News articles. You can add a news article at the bottom of the home page of your family site, and then they will always appear there for everyone to see.
Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages and I agree that none are perfect. We will address this in the future and allow a better way for people to add this information more naturally.
We do get help from volunteers to translate our site and we do have great tools for doing that. Please contact Daniel Horowitz, at daniel@myheritage.com.
Daniel is responsible for managing all the translations.
Hi, could you please make it possible to change the order of items on the Home page. I would like to put my slide show and events higher so people don't have to scroll down so far to see it. Also could we have more space for writing Family New?
