I would just like to add that I have the exact same problem. My primary monitor is to the left. When maximizing it looks like it spreads across both screens as I just se half of the program on the left monitor. But on the right monitor it just gets white.
I love the timebook, but it is not terribly smart at picking out photos. For instance, for pictures of the one of the main person's children or sibblings, it should strive to pick photos in which the other children or sibblings do not show. Otherwise, all children and sibllings' pages look pretty much the same. Besides, picking out photos in which most, if not all, sibblings and children show is what should be done in the family pages. The same can be said for couples, e.g. parents, grandparents. It's not difficult to devise a scoring system based on these criteria to rank and select the photos.
I’ve become a little frustrated with the forum and the way the posts and replies are displayed. Especially at the sub forum level.
The Main forum index page is clear and precise but at the subject level those posts with any replies are expanded within the subject index.
– eg) post “Ex-partners Status”(my current page 2 of Forums > Family Tree Builder) has 9 replies listed. To me these should only be expanded and displayed if I click on the Initial post Subject and displayed in a new / separate page with only this subject. To me it makes the sub forum index look rather junky and takes up a lot of space. If there are 6 / 7 subjects listed and each has 3 / 4 replies well they goes a page full. If I wanted to find something from last week / month, then pages have to brought up searched though. And since you have a page selection, subjects could be browsed very easily. 1 2 3 etc.
A couple of new item could be added to the sub index subject bar-“#of Replies”, "#of Views” would be interesting, if not useful. Also, the posting / reply date in a standard format - not 159 days ago , not to many of us think in number of days ago.
I remember when I first joined that one post I browsed took up many , many pages before I ever got to another topic. And topics / subjects are what we are looking for and of course just general browsing to see what’s happening. And sometimes to give help from our own experience.
I know you have the code somewhere, even with this page – 15 topics , 25 lines.
This is similar to the Hourglass, but also includes all descendants and spouses of the main person's ancestors. This makes sense for families that keep in touch with their 2nd and 3rd cousins. In addition to the main person, the user would choose how many generations to go back in time from her. For instance, I would choose one of my grandmothers and 1 generation back. This would give me my grandmother and grandfather, their parents, sibblings and all their descendants.
I'm trying to uplaod additional content to people's profiles but the only option I can see is to add it as a photo.
Can we have an option to add "related files". eg. I have census and ship manifests I would like to add to profiles on my tree but currently can only add these as photos or as web links. Similarly I would like to be able to upload PDF files with other related material.
The issue behind this request was discussed on another post, but I do think it would be decent to send a complimentary email form letter so that a person can decide what to do before hand.
Some fields in the member profile and the tree seem not to be linked. One key example is the photo. MyHeritage is smart enough to use the first photo the member is tagged on as the tree photo, but then it takes an extra step to confirm that same photo in the profile page. That is sometimes confusing, and the added flexibility is in detriment of ease-of-use.
There are plenty of scripts available out there for downloading friends' albums from facebook. It shouldn't be too hard to extend the facebook photo upload function to include friends' albums. Uploading tags matching site members with facebook ids in their profiles would be a bonus.
I love the 'Add family events' section on the LHS of the Home page. Shame it's so short! It'd be great to click on a 'See more' link to go to a page with all missing info on the tree.
Even better would be to also have on that page all the inconsistent and strange info, e.g. children older than parents, partners with 100 years in age difference, etc.
Part of our windows client application 'Family Tree Builder' includes a tree consistancy checker, where you can get consistancies as you described. You are welcome to export you tree through GEDCOM and import it there, and check your tree for inconsistancies.
Excellent. So you have the functionality already! I'll look forward to seeing it ported to the website, so that I can use the 'fix it' link/button there as well (rather than seeing the errors in the software, and fixing them manually on the website).
It'd be best if MyHeritage completely ignored accents on characters when searching for a name. One is never quite sure whether the name was entered with or without the accent on the tree. Ignoring accents when searching is the industry standard set by Google.
