I would propose even more choices such as an icon to mark war service. Perhaps even choices indicating which war, or side they served on.
Or how about one to mark direct line ancestors. My families have a lot of common first names, and it helps to know which john or Isaac is on screen. Direct line or anceslory.
Perhaps an icon for country of origin. In my case it would be nice to have an icon indicating if this individual was from England, Scotland, Ireland or Germany.

I too would truely appreciate this - perhaps use images of flags?
These are great ideas and the systems are obviously being used already in other programmes. There is one example above me as I write this; a smiley icon.
Simple to use too. A set of those with different symbols and flags as suggested would massively simplify the work involved in keeping up a family tree.
I recently imported a GEDCOM file and ended up with duplicates of every person in my tree, which was realized too late to actually fix it. Now I am left with over 820 duplicate entries, some with more information than the duplicate copy.
Adding on to the duplicate person tool, a feature where you could merge duplicate people would be nice. This way, you wouldn't be left to delete and move people by hand or broke linage, and you could select which information to change/move over/etc.
