I've just had an embarrasing situation arise - someone sent me an email about my family tree, and I didn't recognise him as someone I'd been in touch with via Smartmatches.
It would be nice if there was some way of being able to view the comments we send to other tree owners when initiating or confirming Smartmatches, either on the web site (like the Inbox) or by having a copy of the email sent to the other person also sent to ourselves. If the latter, it could be something we choose to receive or not by checking or unchecking a box for it.
Most of the time I receive a messages, its not obvious, when I dont recconize the name, which tree it relates too.
The smart match on the web lists smart matches found on My Nelson N. Z. ..... XXXX tree, if other party makes a comment or sends message why can't this information be related back to me?
I understand that you are referring to the email reminders that you receive. If you click on the link in these emails, you will be taken to the site, and there you will be able to see which tree this Match is for.
However, I understand your suggestion, and I will pass it on to our development team.
I just started my family tree project today, and the first program I used was something on another site that works pretty well but doesn't have the networking options that myheritage offers. However, one really important feature of the other site is the option to first add an ex- or current partner and then specify whether it was a marriage, engagement, relationship, etc. After that is decided, the current partner is the most closely linked and any children from either partnership are aligned between the two parents, another nice and diplomatic feature that this site seems to be missing. For example, my parents were in a relationship that ended before I was born, and my step-father is my Dad. But in the online tree builder there isn't a way that I've found to clearly establish that my biological father is an ex. This makes sharing my family tree a somewhat stressful endeavor. I would use the software, but as I'm using a Macbook that's currently not possible.
On the tree you will appear to be in two places. Do not delete one of these entries as it is not a duplicate entry, it is a mirror image of you with both Parents and if you delete the one the other one is also gone.
I wish there was an option other than confirm or reject. There are many people that do not have enough information to confirm or reject. There should be an option for "review for more information" or "review for addtional research".
I am trying to make my way through the matches and I can't always remember which ones I want to go back to when I have time.
You can just do neither. Confirm or reject ones you know about and leave the rest. Once you have researched them, you can go back and confirm or reject the ones you left.
Thats means you have to individually click on confirm/reject or do nothing (if you want to research further) for each individual listing. If you are rejecting a match there is additional need to click on the re-confirm button.
That is what I have been doing. However there are so many to review, that it will take too long to get back to the unchecked ones. I was hoping for a better method.
I guess what I don't understand is the difference between the ones you just haven't rejected/confirmed and ones you might mark "review for addtional research". Let's say you have received fifty smart match names with someone else's tree. You are going down the list of names. You have discovered that you can confirm that they all match except names 11 and 35. So you confirm the other forty-eight names and leave those other two names unmarked, if you do not know for sure that they do not conflict either. What is the difference between that and actually having another option for "review"?
P.S.
I don't mean to be argumentative here. It would be fine with me if they implimented your suggestion. : )
I wish I had only 50 to go through. I have 695 matches. And most of those are only there because they happen to be the same gender and a similar spelling of their first name. ( a real waste of time ).
If there was a seperate folder for "further research", I could put possible matches into, I could work on researching and contacting website owners with questions, etc. (in between weeding out the "smart ?" matches)
We currently do not have this option, although thank you for the suggestion. I will be sure to forward it to the appropriate department for consideration.
Please let me know if you have any other ideas as we do value such input from our users.
I know the program has a feature to search for duplicates; then you go through and manually fix the duplicates. Is there any way that we can search for duplicates then edit them in the same window?
Our new Check for Duplicates feature in Family Tree Builder runs a duplicates check on your family tree, locating individuals that may be duplicates. You can then edit your tree accordingly by clicking on the duplicated people to open their cards and edit their details.
Perhaps I can rephrase that. Why not use the same procedure you use for the 'step-by-step' merging of smart matches for the duplicates. Go through and choose which information will be merge; for example:
