I send regular updates to all my family members on MyHeritage.
I am wondering if it would be possible for a copy to post to the website under 'new items'?
Some of my family members miss the email when it comes out and it would be nice to have a copy post to the site for them and new members to see these update emails.
It would be great to find and merge duplicate family right on the MyHeritage website and not have to download work on the tree and then bring back to the website, way too much work.
We currently only have the Find Duplicates tool in Family Tree Builder and not on the site for those who edit the tree online. Since you edit your tree in Family Tree Builder, you can use it when editing your tree.
Not sure which version you are using, but in mine, I can run a duplicate report. This brings up all the duplicate names and allows me to take action on them.
It also runs reports of common errors like bad dates, locations, etc.
Scott, thanks for your reply, I would like to do the work on the online site and not Family Tree Builder. I have never had much luck going back and forth with new trees and deciding if i should or should not include pictures etc, etc.
One of the things that would make the creation of nice graph easier for me, would be a way to exclude people when doing a descendant wheel graph. Typically I would not want to see children who died at a young age in my graphic as they only take up valuable paper space, so a 'Exclude people who died before N years' would help me a lot.
Another category of people I would like to exclude are the spouses of the last generation represented as that typically double the number of names to include and make it extremely hard to produce compact diagram.
Unfortunately we don't have the option to exclude specific people when creating a chart. What you can do is created another copy of your tree in Family Tree Builder by saving it with another name, then remove all the people that you listed and then genrate the chart. They won't be included in it.
I am now walking thru 1000's of Smart Matches. The presentation of the names changes depending on the preferences of the tree owners.
Wouldnt it be better if it was presented with my/your preferences since it is I/you who have to do the comparing. Some times it is difficult to see if it is the same person.
I.E
My preferences: The person is a person from a noble family (noted within the parantheces) and shown only with birth name.
Kristina Birgersdotter (Birger Håkanssons ätt)
Here someone have placed the family name together with given name and also have family name as birth name and then selected to have married name first.
Kristina Hjorthorn MARINASON LEOPARD (Born HJORTHORN)
Here is the preference to have birth name first and then Married name.
If you then take these names and squize them in the narrow columns in SM it is very hard to decifer them. Upon all this it is not obvious that these 3 persons are actually the same.
Just for information:
In the first example I have choosen to only have birth name on people because it was very common to remarry when first husband/wife died and which married name shall I then use? Of course I select the relative to me but that is not the same for somebody else. The Family name differs but is the same anyway. Why? The Hjorthorn (Deer antler) was the coat of arms but the family Head was Birger Håkansson. It requires some skill to be a genealogist.
I would like to delete half of a tree so I can post it separately. I just tried the recommended help suggestion which required me to individually load each member of that part of my gedcom into a new file. It would help immensely if I could select more than one person at a time, or could even select a group with the same last name. Each time I have to scroll down to find the next name--It won't even go back to where it left off. For anyone with a tree of more than 6 people this is a terrible time consuming process! I wish I had never entered my husband's tree with mine.
I also thought I might be able to copy my gedcom and then just delete the other branch, and save the one half, but I cannot find any way to remove people once they are entered.
I agree that something more simple than instructions for 33 steps is needed for this common problem. I recently tried to do the export/import file dance for eliminating duplicates, and it did not work. Don't know yet if it is because I'm using Windows XP and Excel from 2002, or if it is a true software glitch.
Hey, I have a MAC and want to split my tree using online web site. I posted 3-4000 people including my wife's line and now get 1000's of smart matches for her side. PLEASE MAKE THIS EASY TO DO. ONLINE.
Our Family Tree Builder software has the tools you need to make the division.
It means a few extra steps to move your online tree into the software and back after you've finished, but it's entirely doable to split your tree so you don't have to remove each entry one by one.
To move the tree:
1. Download and install Family Tree Builder - www.myheritage.com/ftb
2. Log into your family site and click on Family Tree > Manage Trees.
3. Export to GEDCOM
4. Save the GEDCOM to your computer and double click on it to open in Family Tree Builder (FTB).
5. Save the tree in FTB and then click on File > Export GEDCOM.
6. Save As, click Next and Next
7. On the next screen select "Include only selected people".
8. Choose the eldest ancestors of the branches you want to keep. Include spouses and descendants. Click OK
9. Choose YES to save a photo album file if you wish and then the tree will start exporting.
Now you have exported the parts of the tree you want to continue to work on. The next thing to do is put the tree back up on your family site.
1. Open the new tree you just created in Family Tree Builder.
2. Save it and click on File > Export GEDCOM
3. This time export the full tree. Select all people in project.
4. Save the file to your computer and remember where you saved it.
5. Log into your family site.
6. Click on Family Tree > Import GEDCOM.
7. Browse to find the file and import.
8. Go to Family Tree > Manage Trees and delete the old tree (if you wish).
I hope this information helps you. Let me know if you have questions along the way.
When I click on the smart match link I am taken to the smart match and away from my family tree screen I was working on. I'd like the smart match to open in a new window so I can easily return to where I was in my tree.
I have trained myself to click on the tree button in the status bar after any changes made from Smart Matches. It works and shoots me right back to the appropriate person on the tree. Don't know why I didn't think of that 6 months or even a year ago!
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE can you make it so that Step-children can be added?? I love this package but the downside is an archaic approach to children born to unmarried parents who eventually go their separate ways & often marry other partners! At the moment once a couple are married you can't detach just one of them as the natural parent of a child which is ridiculous. I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult for you to programme it so that we can select 2 people individually who aren't necessarily current spouses?
To be accurate you would of course need to define the status of a new married partner to a child too by way of adding further choices in the drop down menus so that when you hover over the child's card it shows that a partner is a Step parent, adopted parent or natural parent. It would be nice to be given the choice to decide for ourselves whether to show all this on the tree or not.
I've also noticed that regardless of whether or not 2 people married they are still considered spouses regardless of what status you choose! Please can something be done about this too?
