Not really an answer to your question, but I listen all the time to internet radio. Mainly Pandora but also 365 or Sky. Faantastic. I got quite good computer speakers; sub-woofer, and two tweeters on the desk-top, for thirty-something dollars on sale at twenty-something. Often, I listen to Celtic folk music, and pipe bands, which is appropriate for someone with Scots and Irish background on my father's side! Love it. Regards,
I've recently started using MyHeritage and would like to ask if there is a possibility to use the mobile application (Android) to edit the tree offline and then to update the tree once I connect to the Internet.
This would be very useful I think not only for me, as I think many people such as myself go abroad and have to do research in places where there is no wi fi, and mobile Internet abroad is not such a good idea in Croatia.
Thank you for writing and we appreciate your patience regarding this matter.
I understand that you would like to have the ability to edit the tree offline in the mobile app - however, this is not a possibility yet. We will add this suggestion to our developers.
However the functionality that you are describing fits the Family Tree Builder software, which allows you to edit your family tree on your laptop and then publishing it later on when you have an internet connection.
I have used FTB for years now and would love to see more research toold implimented. The current version has a task feature which can be helpful but it would be wonderful if there was an automatic list for each person. For example, when you cright clicked on a person a screen would come up similar to this checklist (http://meandmyancestors.blogspot.com/2010/04/research-check-list.html) The user could check off what he has done and maybe leave notes on certain things.
Additionally, i think it would be really helpful to hae a concept map view of person like found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~genroots1/concept_map.pdf. I find this really helpful and a different view than is currently given even on a family fact sheet.
When doing Smart Matches, sometimes sites are encountered, where most people are marked Private. I appreciate that there are cases which are justified - they are still living persons or they have asked to be hidden and so on. When it is about people who lived hundreds of years ago, one starts wonder whether these persons are protected by mistake, eg. by a setting made default. Also, it difficult to do something about it, when you do not know who the initiator of the lock is. I wrote to a site owner, who had many persons marked private. He just said he did not know and that he just copied them with the matching process. Neither did he know about the detrimental consequence to the matching process. For my part I simply stop doing matching persons with most persons marked Private. It is simply not worth the effort, when the available information is scarce anyway.
Is there anything you could do about developing the system in such a direction that the unnecessary protection is removed?
I have come to realiize that there something seriously wrong with the Private process. I have attached to screenshots which clearly proves this.This is just one sample of numerous samples I went through to prepare this.
One shows an extract from the online Smart Match process, where the person to be matched is riddled with Private designations for his family members.
The other shows the option where you may open a family tree map comparison between the two persons. Here you see the same persons, but now nothing is hidden, except for one thing. One person is still marked Private in the lower right corner.
This proves another thing, all the persons, except one, are not marked Private by somebody but probably by a system bug, except perhaps for that one single person.
The MH support suggested after thorough tests a that large number of Private designations could have come from missing or erratic death date entries. Persons without a death date would be marked Private if considered being alive and therefore marked Private automatically. This is contradicted by the test I made with a fellow genealogist. In Smart Matches he showed a person with a Private designation. Checking the same person's card showed no signs of a Private designation. Neither was there anything wrong with his death date.
If the attachments do not come out right I am happy to send them as an attachement to an email.
Hopefully MH does something about this, and the sooner the better!
The two atttachments I sent with the previous entry were lost somewhere and I'll try to attach them to this entry. It is the MH Forum that is playing tricks with me. Well, if somebody wants to look, send me a message and an emal address and I'll send them.
There is currently a problem in the forums where attachments are not showed on the forums. We are sorry for the inconvenience, any photos that you would like us to see you can attach to the email response.
Regarding the Smart Matches we are currently investigating this issue further, we will let you know of any developments. Thank you for the information you sent us via email - we appreciate it!
Thank you for writing and bringing this to our attention, this matter is under investigation and we will let you know if we find more information about it. I've contacted some users regarding this issue to acquire more information about this matter.
If you have more relevant information about the specific problem of matching with <private> people I would be more than glad to hear about it. Please try to post information that is relevant only to this problem in this thread.
Some month ago, I did found a lot of Smart Matches with a family site, I did knew the site manager. So, I didn't klick it away and asked for membership.
First I did see for every matched person, most of the related (parents, children, partners) were marked as <private>. After I was a member of this site, everthing was ok.
The site manager of this site works with the FTB and she did assure, that she does not marked deceased persons as private (last tab of the person form).
As a member of this site, I did check the persons on the online familytree, were I saw as <private> before. And I did not found something wrong.
I know, it's not so much info about, but I hope it helps a bit.
I became suspicious about the FTB. Does the FTB interpret an empty 'dead' event on a persons profile as a noexistent 'dead' event and assume this person as living and then set this person as private on the website during the sync process?
If you use the add child in edit family there is no option to put sources into the file. Thus when you have added a child - or children you have to go and edit each new child file to add sources. Could be easier I think.
Preciso reportar dificuldades no uso so aplicativo, versão premium, quanto às qualificações, especialmente dos cônjuges e "Bugs" na sua publicação.
Não existe uma qualificação que exprima o "Companheiro" como cônjuge; Não existe qualificação adequada para cônjuges (Pai e Mãe) que decidiram ter filhos, mas não casaram, ou seja não tem relação a não ser que são pai e mãe de um filho "Somente";
1 pessoa casou, teve filhos, separaram-se, um dos cônjuges se uniu (companheiro) a outra mulher, tiveram filho e se separaram, mas ao publicar no site My Heritage e mãe eex-companheira foi qualificada de "namorada" o que absolutamente não é, causando desconforto na familia, o que me parece um bug;
A propósito não existe a qualificação "Namorados" para definir um relacionamento reconhecido pela familia e isso é comum no Brasil, onde namorados até convivem, mas não se consideram companheiros ou noivos;
A qualificação de sobrinhos quando decorrentes de segunda relação de um dos pais, sai publicado como "parente" causando desagrado a todos, pois os filhos de irmãos do primeiro relacionamento de um dos pais está correto, ou seja "Sobrinho";
Os filhos de segundo relacionamento de um dos pais é qualificado de "meio-irmão", mas isso além de não ser correto, não é bem visto pelos familiares e a legislação brasileira não permite essa diferenciação, então proponho de o sistema pelo menos permita alterar, sugerindo ao administrador confirmar como quer qualificar a pessoa;
Indeed you are right - males can change their last names as-well, and I understand why it could be important for you to perhaps change the phrasing. However it could also be quite confusing for people who are used to "Maiden" and "Married" names instead of the suggested.
We work by the status quo of genealogists, and so making such a change will be hard to implement social-wise.
However, I suggeted this to the appropriate department and hopefully your suggestion will get through.
Whenever I generate a family book, my sources with notes generate as pages of code rather than the details I typed. Also, when I add long notes to people (usually the content of obituaries) it ends up formatted strangely in the book no matter how many times I try and fix it.
I would also like to see options to customize the family book like you can with charts. I was disappointed to see that the images I attached to the sources weren't included when I generated the book. I intend to edit the PDF to add them once I'm done with the tree, but that will include changing all the page numbers, ect. Just an option to generate it without page numbers would save me hours!
The Family Book is a third party software that we license a version of. It is well loved by many.
In regard to your issue with notes showing up as pages of code, a new version of the Family Book software will be released very shortly that should take care of this problem. In order to prevent this in the future, try pasting your notes into notepad first to remove any hidden code and then paste into the tree.
About customizing the Family Book, the level of customization you are looking for is simply not available in the version of the Family Book we offer. Honestly I am not sure it is available in the full version either, but you are welcome to learn more about the full version of the Family Book (Complete Genealogy Reporter) here.
